i am really gassing to scallop the last 6 frets of so on my guitar.

but i dont really know if i want to attempt that myself or pay to have someone do it.

what are the advantages and disadvateges?!

and what would be a rough cost estimate to have about 6 frets done?

will it work with .12's? or should i got back to .10's?

also will it increase the harmonics in those regions but still allow me to have a low action?

thanks,
edm

I scalloped my board by myself. It's a long process, but not hard, pretty easy actually. You should check out the tutorial at I used that tutorial and got great results!
Scalloped boards feel a lot like having SUPER tall frets with insanely easy bending. You can benefit from using heavier guaged strings than you are used to because the tension won't hold you back as much due to the new bending capabilities.
As for increase of harmonics...I didn't notice any. Scalloped boards aren't as different as most people make them out to be, it's still a very familiar feel.

Hope that helps!

how many frets did you scallop? im depating on the last few or the last 12. after about the 17th fret i start getting into some trouble with bending and such because of the string tension.

i do have a practice board so i will definatly try it on that first before i tare into my baby.

thanks,
edm

I paid someone to do mine, and its fully scalloped- it feels strange to me to just have a few frets done....also, it feels a lot different than just having tall frets. Check the archives here for lots more discussion on it too.

Don't let it turn out like that.

Get a warmoth.

oh, Biu, do you have any pics of it?

im not sure if i want to shell out for a warmoth $283 plus shipping. and i only want from the 17th on. i might go warmoth. ill give it a try on a old neck and see what it turns out like!

that picture is what i deffinatly dont want it to turn out like.

Oh if you just want 17th on, i bet it would be pretty easy. Yeah, practice on an old neck and good luck!

Sounds cool. Let us know how it turns out.

try out a JEM, mebbe? they have pretty much what you're describing.. just to see if the idea of the scallops on the high frets appeals to your tastes..

A friend of mine has a ESP M-1, with scalloping. I love to play it, and borrow it as often as he lets me. It is definitely a different experience to play with, and it is great for leads. Dont like it much for rhythm as I tend to push too hard on the strings. As you only want to scallop a part of the neck, this wont be a problem.

here is mine:

I'd recommend NOT doing it. I scalloped a neck years ago, from the 10th to the 22nd, and the neck started to bow more in those frets than the lower frets, and the neck was ruined. I ended up throwing the neck away. Just leave your guitar alone. Just my 2 cents.

I agree, unless of course you hire a professional to do it and someone whos had alot of experience with this kind of work and whos been successful with it. I personally wouldn't wingit and do it myself. If you insist on doing it yourself I would really recommend buying a cheap neck to experiment on first that way you aren't out a load of money later if you mess up on your ACTUAL project....

I tried playing one a few years ago and I felt like my fingers really hurt afterrwards. Guess I was using the wrong technique.

Scalloping is tricky work. I'd pay to have someone do it for you. Removing wood from the neck seriously compromises its strength. They're great if they're done right, though.

i think i am going to save up and purchase one from warmoth.

strat style angled headstock, maple/ebony. no top fret markers. scalloped 12-22.

what has a faster finishe?
satin or gloss?

Regarding faster finishes, it's not really a question of which is faster, it's more of what you prefer. Scalloped necks won't let you play faster to begin with. What they will do is allow you to get each string by the balls.

i know what you are saying about the finishes. i herd somewhere that one of them (maybe gloss) as a tendecy to gum up when playing.

dont know if that is true or not.

Satin.
