Hello. Can anyone recommend a clean volume boost. I need to raise the volume for leads. I definitly don't want to color my tone in anyway. Just a clean boost. Possibly true bypass. Not an overdrive.
from : localhost//website....shtml#booster You are on the website, after all.
And yes, it's true bypass and works great.
I don't think so...Gain means: An increase in signal power, voltage, or current by an amplifier, expressed as the ratio of output to input. Also called amplification. Thats from dictionary.com. The pickup booster is a clean volume boost, NOT AN OVERDRIVE.
If your amp has an effects loop you can use an EQ pedal in the loop for clean boosts. I have done this with a Boss GE-7 in the loop of my Marshall Jubilee. Works a treat.

That's what it does, just boosts the volume. In this case, gain refers to volume boost, not overdrive, the same as a gain knob on a stereo or home theater component - the unit itself introduces no overdrive or distortion. It may overdrive the front end on an amp a bit, but just because it will hit it with more volume. It depends on what kind of amp you run it in front of. I own it, and it's great, try one if you get the chance. The resonance switch works as described too, it's subtle, but does the trick.
Does anyone know what the Pickup Booster uses for the boost? An opamp?
The duncan pickup booster is a great little unit...true bypass, build like a tank small foot print and does a killer job!
i think it would be better to boost the signal at the effects loop as simon f said.slash also puts the eq pedal on the effects loop on his jubilees for his leads. putting the boost at the front i think will have little effect on the volume when your already overdriving the amp, the boosted signal will only be compressed by the preamp. just a thought, i havent tried it
Yes, put it after the pre if you can. It will just increase distortion before the pre.

The SD Pickup Booster is all discrete circuitry. No op-amps. And I didn't just read that off the webpage, I just opened mine up and looked.
Although, I'm not sure how important that is these days. Modern IC chip technology is pretty amazing. The $300 Grado RA-1 headphone amp is a 39-cent op-amp, with a few resistors and caps around it. It's literally $5 worth of parts. Its renowned for its fidelity.
you could simply wire a volume cut box with a volume pot and a bypass w/ two jacks. Activate the switch-set your amp to how you want to play regularly-then set the amount of 'boost' by using the volume knob. When you bypass the volume pot, you get your boost-just set your amp a little bit higher.
I think it's a good idea because it's cheaper, and you're using your amp to get the boost. Add volume to your amp and subtract volume using a pedal instead of keeping the amp's volume the same and using a pedal to raise the volume.

Duncan pickup booster, or a EQ pedal set for a flat boost, ot a Tubescreamer, or an EMG Afterburner.... THis could be a very long list......
or you could use a volume pedal
in the effects loop so it doesn't lower the output of your pickups
unless you want that?
No mention of the Xotic RC Boost? Great clean boost pedal. An awesome addition to any pedalboard.
