Hi, just wondering whther or not my heavy Les paul copy is safe on a guitar wall hanger? I am not worried about the hanger coming off the wall, more whether the guitars head can take the weight without any risk of damage.

What do you guys think?

thanks

i've had all my guitars hanging for years. even a heavy fender-p bass. no problems whatsoever. i think i remember seeing something on the net about this a while ago. something along the lines of the strain on the neck of the guitar from hanging is not much when you consider all the tension put on the neck due to the strings. basically, the guitar can easily handle it. don't worry.

Think about the wall of guitars at any guitar shop they usually have them hanging on the wall by the headstock.

The only issue you would probably ever have is the rubber on the hanger interacting with a nitro finish. Your finish is probably poly, so I'd say it's a non-issue.

Make sure you get sturdy hangers, like the String Swing.

Considering the amount of axial load being placed on the guitar neck in compression is far greater than the weight of the guitar, 10 pounds of axial force in the opposite direction isn't going to hurt anything at all.

Not that I recommend it, but the amount of wood at the headstock is probably sufficient you hold your body weight in addition to the guitar. I wouldn't trust the wall hanger than far.

The only problem I've ever had was with a Tele. The shape of the headstock can be problematic for hanging. Although the rubber did quot;eatquot; through the finish on a SG I used to have.

I've always read that hanging a guitar up is best for a guitar, although i dont remember the reason why....

Hangers are great and will casue no damage to your guitar nor will a typically heavy guitar such as an Explorer or Les paul tear them out of the wall or break a head or anything.

THe only thing to watch out for is Nitro finishes... a few years can leave black streaky, pad the neck cradle with a soft rag if the axe has a nitro finish.

Not an option for me.....living in earthquake prone Northridge, Ca. There's a faultline 2 miles from me. Even if that weren't the case, I'd still rather not cause wear'n'tear on both sides of my headstocks.

Yeah, i was going to say that.

The ones that have the chemical interaction problem are the ones with vinyl or black neoprene collars. Because nitro continues to harbour solvents for mmany years after application, these provide a molecular pathway for the volatile plasticizers in vinyl and neoprene; these will effectively turn the lacquer into wax...

The best solution, if you have this type of hanger or stand is to replace the vinyl or neoprene with silicon tubing if possible. This is chemically inert.
