I'll admit it, for years I never liked teles. I thought they looked quot;goofyquot; and I hadn't played one in probably 5 yrs.....so this week I decided to go to GC and try out a Mccarty (which was friggin' sweet , but that's off subject) . While I was there I saw a lite ash tele and decided to try it out....Well, holy **** I was blown away! There was just something about it, it sounded like what I've always tried to get my strat to sound like... It just seemed to have more character than my strat: fuller, punchier with great clarity... Then today I started thinking about my strat, it's an ash body and maple neck/fretboard...like the tele I played.... a few years ago, after never using the tremelo and getting tired of tuning issues, I put 5 springs in and put the bridge flush against the body, so it's kinda-sorta like a hardtail....although I love the 2 and 4 positions, my favorite strat pup sound has become neck and bridge together....I've always liked my strat for it's great clean sound and clarity, and on the rare occasion when someone other than me has played it, they love it... but I've always felt like something was missing...now I know... I like teles!
A friend suggested I should sell my strat and get a tele, but I just can't do it...my strat and I have been through too much together Well I guess the telecaster gets added to my ever-growing G.A.S. list...
I'm sure that a lot of people here will tell you that a Telecaster can be one of the most versatile guitars you can by. I've had mine for about 2 years now and with the pickups of your choice installed you'll be surprised what you can do with them.
I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I have a really nice Hwy 1 Tele and it never gets played. I'd get hosed if I sold it I Duncanized it and everything. I've come to the conclusion (for the 2nd time now in 3 years) that I am most decidedly *not* a Tele man.
I went through a phase where I thought I might be a tele man. I was going to shops and trying all the US standard tele's, MIM classics and Highway1's they had to find a good one.
Then, I picked up a US standard strat, and remembered why I was a strat man. And, I still don't own a decent S/S/S strat!
I'll take a superstrat over a super tele though
I think I'm a Tele man . . . but for non-traditional reasons. Having the separate control plate allows for drastic wiring changes without taking the whole guitar apart.
Also, I prefer my Tele in HSS, so I can still capture some Strat-ish character.
Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) uses a tele. Nuff said.Mind you, I'm a hypocrite - I have a 335-style guitar, which is about as quot;un-telequot; as you can be!!
Welcome to the club! Teles are just so simple, pure, and versitile, but the design is not the most egonamical. IMO that is part of their charm, but also why I no longer own one. There is just nothing like the bite from a Tele bridge! I've been trying to find that in a more comfortable body and neck joint with out success for some time now.
