I am now a avid fan of Gibson Les Pauls. As a matter of fact, after my strat project I am going to start saving money for one. Arg, I've been borrowing one for the past 2 weeks and now I'm hooked. It's true that nothing else sounds or plays like them. Can you believe it? I don't know what kind of jedi mind trick was used but I've turned over to the dark side.

disclaimer: Gibson still has bad business ethics and lots of guitars they put out are terds. But the good ones are GOOD.

haha that's funny. i love my MIJ epi les paul custom i just got. it plays reaaaal nice, gotta get used to the crazy heavy weight though.

hahaha...i know what you mean...i hate Gibson the company and the fact that they stoped online pics of stock from small dealers...this is making buying one a PITA!!! but i do love my LPs and am about to buy another one if i can find the right Trans. Amber standard or standard prem. plus with a jaw dropping moster flame top...the cash is here but no one has quot;myquot; guitar in stock and i've tried a bunch of places...anyone wanna help me find it?

No matter what humbucking guitar I ever buy, my 90 Goldtop will beat it. Now, it even has a pickup in it that I can say I designed and made at the Duncan Factory! Overwound nickel C-5 and 59N.

What gets me is one minute I can play bumpin' jazz on it then flip over the gain channel and rip out some searing leads and chunky metal. It doesn't get any better than that.

Heh had a few of those, ended up selling all of them.
I really never got comfy with LP's, I like the sound....but they are just...heh oh well not my kind of guitar, well maybe a Jr, those I dig bigtime for some odd reason

He He!

Welcome to the club. There's always room for one more.

Agree with you about the company though.

I know what you mean. After UGD, I've been hit by a MASSIVE LP GAS. I think I might end up picking up one of the Agile ones, with the ebony fretboard and whatnot. I'd kill for a dark blue flametop with ebony though...

you and me both, DSS3 ... i think a certain oversized admin spiked the water glasses on our side of the table ... just noodlin' on his R8 before i got up there i could tell the thing played like butter ... plugging it into GJ's bogner only made it the GAS worse ... i hope i was playin' good notes 'cus i sure was havin fun just getting THAT sound ...

how close to you suppose an agile with a set of ANTs in it would get?

cheers

I was as harsh a critic of Gibson as anyone, and still detest their policy towards dealers, and the quot;no showquot; pics on the net attitude. However, all of that aside, when you find a Les Paul that was put together on a good day, from good wood, and then QC is on the ball....it's tough to beat.

Welcome to the dark side...and que that famous Queen song.......
Annother one bites the dust!

And if you're looking for that special Les Paul, I suggest the following two dealers that I have heard nothing but rave reviews about. A famous R8 that a few here have played even came from one of these vendors.

Saul at Centre City Guitars (San Diego)

Wildwood Music - Just outside of Denver

Both have reputations for finding the nicest of the nice LP's, and go out of their way to help YOU find the right one for YOU, and at a price you can live with.

1) I hate Les Pauls.

2) My main axe is a Les Paul.

3) If I could get a Les Paul kinda sound out of a Strat I'd dump mine in a minute, but until then (or my taste in tone changes) my main axe will continue to be a Les Paul.

I own a 74 Goldtop...and it sits in the closet. I MUCH prefer playing my cheap Fernandes Strat. The Paul is verrrrry heavy, especially on gigs...and now even when I play it sitting down. it feels uncomfortably low and somehow off-balance.

I would almost suggest getting a quot;starterquot; Les Paul first to make sure you'd absolutely be thrilled spending $2,500 on the real thing. I found this copy on eBay the other night while searching for something else....and ******, it looks sweet! $199.00??????? You've GOT to be kidding!!! Don't know anything about them, but geeze...for the money it seems pretty damn decent! It's a Stellar brand guitar available at luck!

I know you guys get sick of my recommendations, and think I'm arrogant or something, but I'm telling you......I've been a gearhead since I was 14. I've owned one of everything from almost every company....and continue to do so.

If you want to cut to the chase, and just have the best things ever made, based on my experience and the experience of tone guru's I've met in my life....Lew included, not to mention studio hotrod local guys I know. Here it is.....

Gibson Historics of every kind, loaded with the very best pickups of all makes.
Fender Custom Shops, loaded with the best.
Many of the popular boutique guitars like McNaught, Anderson, Baker, PRS, Gamp;L, and the Fender copy builders that turn out amazing Fender replicas.

Bogner, Dr. Z, Matchless, Bad Cat, Blockhead, Wizard, vintage Fender/Marshall, Soldano, Blues Pearl, Victoria, Diezel, Two Rock, and Vox.

Fulltone, Klon, Banzai, Way Huge, Electroharmonix, ADA, HBE, Z.Vexx, TC, Lovetone, etc.

If you want tone, bypass all the junk and go straight to those brands, and you won't continue to waste money. It cost more, but it's money in the bank, not in the gutter.

1. Saul is THE MAN! Great guy to talk to and his customer service is top notch! He hooked me up with my '60 RI Les Paul Special DC and that thing smokes.

He is one of the largest Gibson dealers, but he builds his reputation off of selling guitars that were produced on a quot;goodquot; day. Bought mine unseen and he shipped it from San Diego to CT overnight to me and it is absolutely spanking new!

what would be ideal for me is a Les Paul studio in white with chrome hardware, ebony fretboard. Clean simple, I don't need anything fancy. The gothic I'm borrowing right now is damn ugly but it sounds and plays like a dream.

I forgive you, X. Nobody's perfect. LOL.

Seriously, though, Gibson did and still can make some fine axes. I've been having a hankerin' for an LP Standard in vintage burst. mmmmmmmmm. I also seriously considered a Studio in a pawn shop this weekend, but it was too much for all the damage that had been done to it. Good luck on finding your perfect one.

What cabs do you recommend? Either 2x12 or 4x12.
