..........60's slim taper necks

....My Black LP Standard has a 60s taper. The Classic obviously had a 60s Taper.

I miss the 50's neck LP I sold to NAPS. I miss the 50's neck on my Deluxe. I miss the 50s style neck on my old early 90s LP standard. Even the neck on the bird is bigger than a 60s slim taper (though not as big as the 50s) and I prefer that too.

Last night I got to play a buddies R6 and his 50s neck LP and WHAM...figured out the missing link (the r6 neck was a little too big though)...I don't even have big hands, but I just am more comfy on them for some reason...I feel more quot;in controlquot;

Any other Paul users find this to be the case (especially those with small or medium size hands)?

there's a reason i realy dont like thin necks.. my fusion is by far the thinnest i want to go. while cool for fast runs, i feel more comfortable with a fatter neck while riffing.. that's why i ordered my rhoads with the neck profile an exact replica of the J.Frog neck which has a nice wide curve all over the neck.

i was a bit worried when zerb told me the fusions had the thinnest necks of all the jackson charvels.. you couldnt imagine my relief when he said that this one was between the soloist and speed profile

I love the huge neck on my R7. The DC I just bought is supposed to be a 60's slim taper, but it feels more like a production 50's. Not near as fat as my R7, but definitely fatter than my PRS wide/thin.

I've never played a guitar neck that I've felt is too big.

I've played plenty that I've felt are too small.

gosh .. i owned 02 x slim tapered. i find them alright

I've always enjoyed the big chunky necks on 50s Specials and Juniors. Then all the Standards that were available were 70s models with the necks that are a touch larger than the 'slim taper' necks. If it wasn't for those necks, I'd probably have owned a dozen or so Classics, but I hate that neck. One day I discovered the Historic series... finally, necks that suit me!

You want to see a club of a neck?

On the left is my 98 R8- on the left is my re-necked 71 Deluxe.

my sentiments exactly!!!

i did play a PRS Hollowbody II the other day that had the fattest neck i've ever played on before though...man that thing felt like a bat...loved it!

The ONLY thing that keeps me from buying a Historic is they are just *too* big..I came real close to buying that R6, but it didn't quite quot;have itquot; compared to the 50s neck....

As I said I don't have big hands (or long fingers)...so there is a point of diminishing returns for me... The 50s neck or 59 rounded profile (nearly identical) is pretty much perfect for me. I fret open and barre chords much better, have better control over vibrato, and also find my thumb ends up in the perfect pivot position when playing leads.......with the 60's i find that I want to wrap my thumb over the top of the board instead of letting my thumb pivot from the back of the neck and then my fingers (cos of the short length) are having to work MUCH harder and don't have as much reach...

i swear if i ever find the quot;perfectquot; neck for my hands i'll never buy another guitar...my hands being comfortable while playing is at the top of my list!!!

the schecter i have on layaway is close...but i've already forgotten what it feels like now...

Agreed.

The most comfortable neck I played and have is a Warmoth boat contour; soft quot;Vquot; shape, 1quot; thick from nut to butt. Now that's a baseball bat. But I love how it feels. I have big hands though.

I actually like the neck on my Epi LP Standard Plus a lot. The nut is narrower than my other guitars but the neck taper is very comfortable. I'm not sure what it's supposed to be when compared to the Gibson tapers but it sure isn't the 59 (way too fat) and isn't thin. It's got a nice happy medium between the two.

Bigger neck better for chording, riffing -- keeps hand in more open and looking like a C shape, thus reducing cramping and fatigue.

Smaller neck is better for getting around quick, plus I like to be able to reach over the top with my thumb and fret the low E string for unusual chord voicings.

I don't really have a preference except to say that I don't want a neck so big that I can't do that thumb thing, and that in my experience (all other aspects of the guitar being equal) bigger neck = bigger tone. So maybe my ideal is slightly smaller than your typical Historic LP neck.

My taste is the same as yours. I love 50's necks, and think they're the perfect size.
For that reason, I don't go after most Historics with club necks, and I wouldn't even consider a 60's neck........I had a Classic 60 a long time ago and sold it within a year.

I also love McCarty necks, and found out an interesting thing when I measured it.
The McCarty has a very soft V, while the Gibson 50's is a perfect C. If you measure around the back of the neck at both the 1st and 12th fret, you'll find that they're the same!

Wanna buy a 57' RI Gold Top that has a neck not much bigger than my Standard with a 50's neck? It weighs an amazing 8.1 LBS and will come with Seth Lovers (double cream I might add) AND the original burstbucker 2 amp; 3's?

that's why I like strat V profile necks-they're quick enough to move around, but there's still plenty to grab.

I used to date a girl like that.

My studio lite's supposed to have a 60's carve...but It definately doesnt feel like a 60's carve. Seems that there tends to be a bit of variety in what they consider the 50's or 60's carve.

Gotta have those thick necks...soo much more comfortable.

Amen to that. The Boat neck is the greatest thing I have ever experienced I have long fingers and big hands and my hands fall right into play everywhere I go on the fretboard. The slight v makes it comfortable to do chords and a lot of people think Warmoth are a joke, but their necks are definitely very impressive.

I love my 60's slim taper neck too. I sorta wish my RI 0 LP Special DC had that baseball bat neck, but the slim taper feels pretty good to me. I don't feel I have to focus on my hand placement when digging in (which is the part that really matters). It's thick enough to work with big hands and thin enough to really shred on. It's just not as thin and small as the impression the name gives.

I've played a couple of 60's profile standards at my local shop along with my friends LP classic, and they just didn't feel 'right' to me. My Lp has the rounded 59 profile and i just feel at home with it.
