I know this is not a dimarzio forum but i wanted to ask if there are any dimarzio pup fans here?
I really like some of thier pups and since they are very different from duncans they are pretty easy to compare

I like a few of their offerings (Fred, Air Norton, PAF Pro). Are we going to get another slew of DiMarzio and EMG threads coming through here again ?

I`m a DiMarzio fan!!!!!! I like Duncans as well but for my style i prefer DiMarzio! I think pickups lean towards a more classic or vintage sound (even the high output p/u`s) and DiMarzio`s have a more modern sound, but both are great!

I love DMZ's. I'm much more of a DiMarzio guy than a Duncan guy, though I have a real appreciation for certain Duncan models and respect the brand.

If I was going to compare the basic tonality of Duncan pickups to that of DiMarzio pickups, I would say that Duncans sound more percussive and focused, and DMZs sound more fat and open.

Duncans also have sort of a quot;scratchyquot; quality to them that is awesome in a lot of applications.

DMZ have kind of a vowel-like response to pick attack which is great for leads. The harder you hit the strings, the more quot;open-mouthedquot; the notes sound. It's hard to describe. If you play softly the notes go quot;doo doo doo doo dooquot; and if you hit harder and harder they go quot;doo deh Day DAH DWAAAAAAquot;

sort of. Duncans are crunchier.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I like the quot;rightquot; combination of guitar, amp, pickups, wood, the whole signal chain.

EDIT: I guess I misread the post a bit. I like em' both.

The Twang Kings are among the best Tele pickups made.

I hate to admit it, but I would have to agree with this statement. DiMarzio has always had a strong partnership with Ibanez which may account for their more modern sound while the majority of Duncan pickups are marketed as Strat or Les Paul replacements. I think DiMarzio has done a better job voicing pickups to work with basswood guitars with floating trems since their pickups generally have more bass and mids with less treble (Breed, Air Zone, etc.). Duncan has a limited offering in this area (Trembuckers?) and haven't really taken off like DiMarzio has.

I've gotten along really well with the PAF7s in my epiphone. Very ballanced EQ, capable of both modern and vintage sounds. They can get a bit twangy.

They make some pretty good sounding pups just like the rest of the companies out there. It's cool that they can offer pups that have a completely different feel than the ones SD makes.

I like the Dimarzio Air Zone and Air Classic Neck. Not a big fan of the Fast Track 1s as they didn't give very good 2 and 4 position tones in my guitar.

i love duncans, dimarzios and EMGs. i use my duncans for classic rock, hard rock and blues, EMGs for metal and although i don't have a dimarzio-equipped guitar right now i prefer them for shred stuff.

From the pickups I've tried, which aren't too many, I like the DMZ equipped guitars more. Note: not pickups.

I think that the different marketing groups and ideas are one of the reasons the market can bear two so big companies. It also helps the customer.

I have often wondered at the SD line, offering really many different PAF versions, only a few high output buckers and a couple of medium ones. Dimarzio offers something quite different.

Big Dimarzio fan....just as I am an SD fan and EMG fan. Between those 3 companies there's SO many different sounds.

I'm really a Joe Barden fan!
But my point is I love the pallet of pups because they all do different things- My first replacement pup was a Dmz dual sound and one of my Sgs lives off of very old PAFs-I've got a Bill L that I had in a 335 20 years ago- For that matter, the cruiser that I just put in the mid position of my nightfly is one of the best pups I've ever had hands down-

But that same parker has a JB in the bridge, so don't get me wrong I like SD a lot as well But even looking at a swinehead that should come out this summer ..essentially a JB and Custom coil together, simply becuase they are the ones that will make this puppy avaialble -

I would like to hear an unholly union of the Full Shred and Evolution.

Snowdog

the only dmz's ive played are the dmz/ibz's in the RG2670(basswood body) I played a few weeks ago, And I actually liked 'em alot.

And those really aren`t real DiMarzio`s!!!!!!!! Real DiMarzio`s are WAY better!!!!!

My luthier keeps recommending a DiMarzio Pre B-1 for the bridge of my MIA Tele. Anyone familiar with that one?

dimarzio makes great pups but i've always had a problem with the size of the wire they use. The wire is so small i kept cutting it instead of stripping it. Also this means the wire breaks easily (anyone else have this problem?). The tone, however, is quite good and has a modern vibe but for an amature they can be a pain to install.
