How do you write a song? Do you write lyrics first? How do you write down your guitar part? Do you write down TABS or musical notes? Explain.

Sometimes I work off of lyrics, but more often then not, the musical idea comes first.
I usually decide what key I want to play in, then start working on chord progressions and riffs in that key. I use modes to link the ideas together.

Once I have a rough idea, I cut a quick and dirty demo with a drum machine.

The song gets refined with the singer, and that's when I usually add the instrumental/solo sections.

Then I make a really fleshed out demo, with much more solid (programmed) drums, harmony guitars, temp solo, bass ideas (if I have any) etc, of the final idea.

Once it gets the okay from the singer, the song is done!

anyway..the way i go about writing songs is 90% of the time i will mess around and write a riff..i then play around with the riff changing it and modifying it multiple times to see what i like the best and what not. i try and re-create what i hear in my head..if i hear a harmony i will try a fifth, a forth, unison, and sometimes a third to see if nething tickles my fancy. i really just owrk off of the riff and eventually write words for it. after i have an idea of how the words are i can write music for a chorus and such and piece it together and work out bridges and such. i record my work sometimes w/ drums sometimes not...i never write any of it out...all either recorded or in my head...i hope that made some sense...

When a get some musical idea, I play it on my guitar to refine it a bit. Then I think what the song is going to be about.

Then I write basic chord progression and melody down. Transitions are always what I forget first so I record them in a rough copy.

After that run the whole song through my head and try to fit the lyrics (you don't have to have them done). If the song seems lyric-friendly, I start working on tabs. I usually do all the parts including vocal.
