Have any of u thought about trying out a new guitar or amp that u thought was going to be great only to discover by playing it that the guitar it turned out to suck? For me it was a rickebacker 360. I looked at my musicians friend magazines for months thinking wow that guitar looks awesome, until i went to Sam Ash and tryed it out and i absolutely hated it. From the sticky neck and fretboard to the bright dull sound, the guitar just wasnt for me. Any of u have similar experiences?

I did once, but only because of the really old rusty strings on it.

The guitar was a Tokai Love Rock, and looked awesome on the wall, but played and sounded horrible because of the strings. It was really disappointing, but I knew as soon as I got it down off the wall that was going to be the case - the strings felt horrible.

The guitar was still nice, and maybe sometime I'll get one.

There was a black Yamaha AES502 Semi-hollowbody with mini-humbuckers that I thought looked cool as hell and bought it without even plugging it in. I'd already owned the P-90 version of the guitar, which I played and loved (and later sold), so I thought the one I just bought would be just as good.

I bought the black one w/ the mini-humbuckers thinking it would rock like nothing else, but the pickup output was low and it just didn't fit my style of playing at all. The fretboard was great, the white binding was gorgeous, and the gold hardware was the icing on the cake. but, eh, the sound wasn't there and I wasn't willing to dump any extra cash into it.

Yup. I had that feeling with a PRS McCarty. I know, some may think I'm crazy. Well, I am but that's besides the point. It is a wonderful guitar, built well, nice sound, but it just didn't feel right in my hands. I didn't like how the neck felt, the finish on it was too thick (made it sticky), but other than that, it's still a nice guitar, just not for me.

There's a difference in thinking you want something and something just not working for you.

I'm embarrassed to say how many Les Paul Deluxes I've owned. I hate mini-humbuckers. I would find one and it would feel good, and if the price was right I'd pick it up. Then a month later I would realize that I hated it as much as I hated the other ones.

I also owned a early 70's Rickenbacker 4001. I knew it was a cool bass, it was mapleglow (natural) and it resembled McCartney's and Lemmy's. I really wanted to like that bass. I had friends that used it and told me how great it was, I let a guy I really respected use it and he sounded phenomenal with it. It was just a tone turd in my hands.

Marshall MG15 DFX. And to a certain extent, my current fender amp, although that's becasue I'm using it as an output for my v-amp, and it's not going so well....

i always thought a 12 string electric would be so cool.......then i went and tried out a few.....old Gibson SG 12 string, ES335 12 string, Fender Coronado 12, strat 12 string, Ric 12 string........turns out, they all have too narrow of fretboards to be comfortable to play, and it was disappointing.....but, i ended up finding another Ric 12 string that was magical.....it played really well and sounded magical......couldn't buy it though

I was like that the first time I tried a Strat. I must have been about 16. I had guitar heroes who sounded great playing Strats (Gallagher, Hendrix, Blackmore, Trower...) and I thought they looked really cool too, but when I first got to try one I found it really hard to play compared with the Gibson copies I was used to. Plus the volume knob got in my way and the pickups sounded really thin and weedy. I'm mostly over it now, but I still prefer LPs and Teles.

Had the same problem with my '77 Deluxe, but rather than get rid of it, God help me, I routed it out and put a '59 in the bridge. I'll go to the hell reserved for guitar manglers and people who talk in the theater, but it does sound REALLY good now!

All the jacksons in the 300 - $600 range. They just didn't feel right. The Ibanez guitars I played in that range all played great. Wouldn't it be great to have a few thousand in pocket change to get yourself a Jackson USA? :P

I'd have no problem doing that to a guitar that has issues to begin with, but I'm really against chopping up a guitar, just because. Especially these days, there are some people that actually think Deluxes are good stock!

I always see rack FX units and get impressed with all the features, and imagine how I could go to a rack system with all the FX mapped with the channels.

Then, after owning one, you realize you don't need 100 channels of different shades of clean, midgain, and highgain, you don't need all those FX, and now you've got a heavy rack, cabinets, pedalboard case, and a crate full of cables, just to get a tone that isn't even as good as 3 pedals into a tube amp. Hence the name 'Rackitis'

To be honest, when it comes to guitars, I'm not often 'disappointed'. That's because I generally try out med-high end stuff, and even then I've played enough guitars to know some will be great and others not. I also know that guitars differ, and don't expect a rickenbacker to sound and play like a modern shredder axe.

If anything, I'm constantly surprised by how good the cheaper stuff I come across is nowadays. Maybe not good enough for me to spend on, but cool gear nonetheless.

I'm more often disppointed by amps and effects.

The 6l6 Mesa Lonestar Classic was a disappointment. Far from a bad amp, but nothing magical.

My local shop guy was raving about the new Traynor amps. Can you say dog?

The Line 6 Flextone 3 has to be the most disappointing amp I've played in a long time. Ugh. I expected it to be somewhat similar to the Vetta, which sounds great but feels wrong, but all I heard was bad tone and feel.

To be fair, I only did it after owning that guitar for 7 years and just decided to do it while being refinished. I know, that's worse than routing it, but I HAD to, the laquer had gone soft. Like I said, though, it sounds SO much better now, and I'll never get rid of it!! The combo of the stock mini neck and the '59 bridge is just incredibly sweet!! I guess that's off topic, tho, I'll shut up now.

That's what internet and discount house shopping will do for you. Thank goodness you get that 45 day return policy.

I'm rarely disappointed in a guitar these days. I normally spend hours upon hours researching my buys (tis half the fun, no?).

But, invariably, I'll get gas for something that has never worked for me in the past, I buy it, I send it back. Case in point: Strats. I get caught up in strat lust from time to time, buy them and then send them back. I can have a brand new strat sitting there and still will reach for a Les Paul each time.

If a guitar doesn't jump into my hands when I walk into my music room, it goes back.

Yeah, I agree. That's why I decided to go ahead and hog out the Deluxe. It was either that or get rid of it. I have the same problem with Strats, too. Been gassing real bad for some single coils, but I know I'll just get frustrated with 'em and put humbuckers or soabars in it, and I've already got enough of those!

just wondering what amps/effects are you using?

With that guitar i used a vox. it was the guitar feel i really hated the most

1) Vox wah pedal was a disappointment for me. So I gotten a Jim dunlop jimi hendrix wah pedal.
2) Dimarzio pickups also another disappointment, it doesn't fit a LP totally. Changed it to Ceramic humbuckers
3) Should've gotten a DSL 401 instead of an AVT 50. The price is a 300 bucks difference but so much better

The body, neck and slight lack of power is kinda annoying but u get used to it (when u have been playing one since u were 7 thtas me alright)
