what is a leslie rotating speaker worth? i know theres tons of pedals that replicate the sound, but i have never ran across a real original leslie until now. they are askin $400 for it and it has been sitting in an old warehouse for years. is there anything i should check on it before buying it? what kind of problems are common to them? i am not very familiar with them at all so any info about them would be greatly appreciated.

It's best to browse eBay to find out what the various types of Leslies are, and how much they cost. Quality runs from full-blown, furniture quality restorations down to units ready to be parted out. There's still a good a good supply of parts available for repairs.

Most real Leslies are one of two types: the big wooden cabinets, and the black vinyl combo types.

Most of the pretty wood ones have tube amps, and are intended to mate up to Hammond organs. To use these with guitar, you need a quot;combo preampquot; (which are getting expensive) or to do some other mods to allow you to plug in a guitar. Or, you can do away with the internal Leslie amp and drive its speaker with a regular guitar amp.

The combo series Leslies had solid states amps, but were designed to work with guitars and combo organs.

Also, Leslie made the Fender Vibratone, which was a speaker only, intended to connect to the output of regular guitar amps. There was also a Leslie-branded version called the model 16 or 18.

Things that can go wrong is mostly drive problems: dried-out, hardened rubber drive wheels, worn-out belts, dry bearings. Restoring a worn-out one can be a fun project for someone who is mechanically inclined. The problem is, to see if a particular unit works, you need some other stuff to get it going, namely switches for on/off and speed control. These were either usually built into the organ or the combo preamp. With a bit of know-how, a schematic, and some aligator clips, you could do it.

Posting pics would help me provide some more-specific information; let me know if you need more help.

As for me, I own the Leslie unit shown in the attached photo. It's an OEM module that Leslie built for one of several home-organ makers. This one was pulled from an old organ; I bought it on eBay for $25. It's identical to the guts of a Vibratone. I'm going to mate it up to a Celestion 12quot; I have laying around and build a cabinet for them. Fun stuff.
