I am looking to buy a tube combo amp.
I want the most amazing full rich Fender cleans that I, you, and God have ever heard. I want the CLASSIC Fender tube sound, lush and bold yet sweet and subtle, a la SRV and Phish.
Preferably 2 or more speakers as to provide the fullest sound.
An overdrive channel would be a plus, but that will drive the price up.
I can spend around 900 dollars...
Traynor?
Carr?
WHAT BRAND?!
CARR's are not THAT cheap. I RAVE about the CARR Rambler.
I personally think the MESA MARK2's are great though the distortion is not quite SRV, it takes pedals VERY WELL!
The 3 best amps I have used for Clean/Distortion
BOGNER SHIVA - tone of GOD both clean and distorted
Budda Super Drive 30 - nice Vox meets Marshall sound, great cleans, small amp sound
Rivera Knucklehead - great classic distortions, amazing foot switching (I prefer the FS7) and the CLEAN IS FENDER! Sadly, the distortion can sound Fender-y.
I am into a more Marshall-y distortion.
For what you described I would highly recommend the MESA LONE STAR, which sounds like a rodded fender, esp in the distortion channel, to my ears. It has a souped up super reverb tone in there too!
The Ultimate clean Fender would be either a blackface Twin Reverb (with JBLs, EV's, Celestions or other great speaker upgrades) or a blackface Super Reverb. Both are very heavy and very loud.
There is nothing else to consider if you're looking for the Ultimate in clean Fender tone.
Anything smaller or lower in output will distort at live performance volumes, and even those two you have to keep the volume to 3 or 4 or less to avoid distortion.
What exactly does Blackface mean?
And how much difference to speaker replacements make?
well i think that Music MAn amps sound really cool amp; well it can get really crunchy (the 65 15 inch model) It loud enough to play with a twin @5(the twin amp; the music man @ 8)
Fender Hot Rod series. Beautiful fender cleans, take the extra money and buy a killer OD pedal.
Already have an HRD Scott!
Then for $900, you will not get a LOT better cleans... maybe, but you'll have to search it out.
Dont forget that I can get Fender products half off...
Yes, that means I can get an $1800 amp and still be in my range.
Dude! Get a custom shop 64 Reissue Vibroverb!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had one when they first came out... great amps! Handwired, diaz mod, SS AND Tube rectifiers!
What about the '65 Twin Custom 15...

Alright Scott, I will look at that Vibroverb!

The Classic Fender sound is a non-Master Volume amp. No overdrive channel. One channel. One channel only.
I wouldn't ever describe SRV's sound as quot;Fender clean.quot; It was the sound of an amp being pushed....brutally at times...by the player.
I'm glad you get good deals on Fender amps but from what you're describing you're not looking for a Fender amp.
I mean songs like quot;Lennyquot;, not quot;Texas Flood.quot;
And I know my Fender cleans, and I want Fender cleans.
And I am looking especially at the '65 Twin Custom 15.

I hate to sound like a broken record here....but why are you latching onto a specific amp that no one has recommended, especially since you distinctly specified that you wanted one with a 2 speaker output?
There are some folks here offering some phenomenal advice. Rather than get all over the map it might behoove you to ask questions about the amps from these amazing wealths of information and really research and play them rather than just jump all over the map with what you intend to buy.
If you want Fender cleans then go with the Twin.....but realize they're god-awful heavy (80 pounds) and for it to get cranked to a point where it will EVER break up naturally you'll just about render yourself and anyone within a 50 yard radius terminally deaf. There's a reason why there's always vintage Twins on the market; they're usually way too loud for most folks needs and too heavy for most reasonable musicians.
I said preferably with two speakers, but since some amps can sound very full with one speaker, I checked it out anyway.
I played a Twin today, and a Super, and both were missing something...I remember playing a Twin 15 a couple years ago and I remember they were stunning, so I figured I could ask others what they thought.
And I dont want this amp to break up at all...I have OD's for that.

Yes, that means I can get an $1800 amp and still be in my range. If I were you I would take a real close look at the new Vibroverb Custom. This is the amp that has the Cesar Diaz mods thet supossedly were done on SRV's amps. It has a switch in the back that allows you to switch between SS rectifier or tube and it also has a switch that will give you quot;vintagequot; or quot;Texasquot; tones. I have personally not been able to find one of these yet to play thru, but it sounds like you are after similar tones that I am. Thius Amp is very high on my list as a possible new amp. This does not have an OD channel, but with a good OD pedal you will get what you want
Here is a link.

I also agree with Lew that either a Twin or a Super Reverb could be the way to go. I have a Silver face Super Reverb that was made around '68. It is an awesome amp, but it is very heavy so moving it from GIG to GIG gets a little old. I also have a Deluxe Reverb and as Lew stated this is a great Amp, but at GIG volumes it is real hard to keep them clean.
I think you are on the right track with the Twin 15! If you want full deep cleans I think it would be your best bet. I use a Carvin XV-212 (Which has EL-34's but can get the Twin vibe pretty close) into a 2-15 Dual Showman cab and the clean sound is amazing! Sometimes I only take the amp to shows and I really miss the fullness that the 2-15 cab has. It's not so good with distortion
because a 15 has more lows and highs but not much midrange, midrange is necessary for distortion but that's where the amps 2-12 come through the best.
.
ypu really want clean Fender ??? You sure ?
...mid 70's Vibrasonic Reverb...UL output transformer, 15quot; speaker, very clean, very loud, cheap as dirt. This was their attempt at a pedal steel amp...stick an EVM 15L in it and it WILL be clean.
Fender Super Reverb (Real Blackface) with upgraded speakers...
OR
66's Super Reverb with D130 JBL's---
Get ready with the BenGay Ointment these amps are heavy and VERY LOUD
I'm going to have to agree with Lew and Bludave about looking into the Super Reverb or the Reissue Vibroverb BF amp....
I use a BF Fender 2x12 Pro Reverb with Webers and much prefer my amp over the Twin....The BF Reissue Vibroverb has me intriqued also, but my Pro Reverb still satisfies my overall BF clean tones and it's only a loud 40 watts...The key to the Pro Reverb is having better transformers, good tubes, and Weber speakers in them...The Super Reverb is the same basic amp but it has the better output transformer,a mid pot,and 4x10s...I'm not a fan of 4x10s but I do love a BF Super Reverb amp...I put the Bassman transformers into my Pro Reverb with either TAD or RCA output tubes and Weber speakers...Just a phenomenal sounding amp! Payed $50 for mine about 15 years ago and I'll not part with it...Hopefully never!
