After going through a PRS SE Soapbar II phase, a PRS CE Mahogany 22 phase, an Aerodyne Tele phase, a '60s Strat phase, and a '62 JM reissue phase, I'm now looking at the '72 Tele Custom reissue. I've read all the reviews and such, I know all the things wrong with it. I'm just here to ninja the pups: QP in the bridge and Duncan Custom in the neck? Opinions, please.
You will most likely want to get another pickguard, because the wide range humbucker on the 72 RI isn't the same size as the Duncan humbucker will be.
It all depends on what you are looking for, what kind of music you want to play, etc., etc. I think if you are planning on new pickups before you even hear the guitar it might not be the right guitar for you in the first place.
Goooood point there. However, I do believe that a Telecaster is the right way to go; I know what I have to do to this biotch to pimp it proper (fretwork, pots, etc). I'll not necessarily be changing the pups, but if the stock ones aren't what I'm looking for I will. The problem is that I live in a 3rd world country where everyone stocks nothing but Cort Strats. x_x So I have no way of testing this stuff out before buying it, so I just listen to recordings etc and decide based on that. I know how the '72 sounds (considering every indie band and their dog was playing the thing last year), and I know how those SDs sound that I mentioned (more or less, anyway), and I believe the sound I want lies somewhere between the two.
In either case, the pups get a bad rep on HC but the body is good for pimpin.
PS The question here is: will the Duncan Custom and the Tele QP work well together, ie not be unbalanced or whatever? Please don't try and convince me to get another guitar, just help me with the pups. Btw, I play Incubus, old and new.
The Wide Range humbuckers are b!tchin (very unique and cool tone IMO)! If you're going to get a guitar with them in it, keep them, or get another Tele with dual humbuckers so they'll fit without any modification to the pickup routing.
1 on the QP, you might want to start with that and see what it sounds like with the stock neck pickup. I love the QP in the bridge of my Squier Tele.

I'll check the Wide Range out, but apparently they sound worlds apart from PAF tone, much more like a single coil. Which I so don't want, otherwise I'd have just gotten a '60s Tele or something.Originally Posted by saladin 1 on the QP, you might want to start with that and see what it sounds like with the stock neck pickup. Mhm. Consensus is the stock bridge pup just doesn't twang like it should. So I could just as well replace it with a heavier pup like the QP.
