Well. i am considering a new amp in the next 5-6 months, my music is mostly quot;stoner rockquot; and some heavy metal, ex: Black Sabbath, Fu Manchu, Kyuss, and Fireball Ministry are some of the bands. I have been looking at the Matamp C7, they are in the UK, and how loud is 7 watts?. What other amps should i be considering, and is 7 watts enough for band practice?

Thanks in advance.

7 watts is kinda small but matamp and the old orange amps were pretty loud. matamp made the original orange amps.

i would think that you may want something a bit bigger, but i know that the quality is there with matamp and that you won't be using the amp for its cleans. if you can try one out first i think that would be best.

Yeah, i have been looking at Orange and Matamp. Problem is, there is nowheres around here were i could try one, if i bought one it would have to be online.

EDIT: and i have always heard is that matamp makes REALLY loud amps, there GTO model is 120 watts, thats pretty damn big.

If you plan on practiceing with a drummer... not even close. I don't have any experience with the amp you're talking about about, but I'd say 30w (with efficiecnt speakers) is bare minimum for a rock band with a quiet drummer. 50w is about what you'd want for an average to loud band, anything over that being a preference for more headroom rather than volume

FWIW, my old 25 watt fender with a celestion greenback is more than loud enough for practice with a drummer. I would look in the neighborhood of 25-40 watts. Unless you are playing out anytime soon, I see little need for 50 watts unless you simply want the power.

Yeah, i was just looking over on the Matamp forum, the guys on there said its not quite loud enough, but also mentioned something about a matamp C15 coming out as opposed to the C7, then there is the 1224, i will have to check how many watts the 1224 is.

EDIT: ok the 1224 is a 28watt head. i think that may be loud enough?

28 watts should be... the next variable is the cabinet to match the head. A nice open back 2x12 cab should do the trick.

Yeah, Matamp sells 2x12's not sure if there open back or not? why open? doesn't closed have a tighter sound or something like that?

Well ... Mat Mathias was one of the creators of Orange Amps. The other being Chris Cooper who still owns Orange amps.

It's probably better to say that Matamps started where Orange left off. I don't believe Matamps were being made back in the 1960's, but I'm not 100% sure. Basically Orange amps were apparently very similar to Hiwatts in construction. When you look at Matamps (I haven't seen the inards of 1960's Ornage amps) they seem fairly similar to the Hiwatt circuts that I've seen. So IMHO Matamp is a continuation of what vintage Orange amps were.

I believe the only P2P Orange Amps out there currently come out of the Custom Shop (and I don't see that much resemblance to Hiwatt or Matamp circuts), and the rest are PCB.

Hurrah for the hijack

Does anyone know of any internet shops that sell either Matamp or orange? i cant seem to find any.

resurrection bump.
