We let the band before us use my Peavey Bandit last night and they somehow managed to blow the speaker! They were playing clean, but it turns out had turned the volume up to 8 with no speaker cab attached, and apparently the speaker didn't like that!

So! Option A: I get a new speaker! I actually really liked the Sheffield 1230 that was in there but was thinking about upgrading to a Celestion. Any recommendations?

Option B: I just buy a new Bandit, a snip at ?220!

Option C: I make this the time to upgrade to a better amp, a Fender Pro Reverb or something. Only downside to this is if a ?200 Bandit gets totalled ah well, if a ?900 Fender gets it! AAAAAARRGGHH!!

Option D: I cut down the Peavey and make a head out of it! Mod-tastic!

What d'you guys reckon?

Eminence speakers are the bomb and cheaper than Celestion

No playing time with either your amp or that Fender, but if the tone of the Peavey was doing it for you, the most cost effective route is clearly simply replacing the speaker. There are a lot of great options for buying speakers, Celestion and Eminence are only two of them.

Maybe you leave the amp alone (it sounds like it has line outs for a cab) and pick up an avatar 2x12 or something.

Additionally, don't loan out your gear.

It's actually the neutrallity of the Peavey I like, it's like pure amplification without colouration, which is what I need.Originally Posted by MikeSAdditionally, don't loan out your gear.

It wasn't really their fault, in fact really it was Peavey's! They put a 75watt speaker in an 80watt amp! So which Eminence would you guys recommend?

How long have you had this Peavey? The speaker has blown how many times? The blame goes to the person who wrecked it for not using it responsibly, not the company who builds the amp.

I've had it about 8 years, and never blown a speaker. But I have to admit this is rather luck than judgement, as I've never used it at gig levels without a cab. And TBH, I probably would have expected an original speaker to serve the amp through volumes 0-10.

If I was building an 80watt combo, I'd put a speaker that could deal with at least 80watts! Just think, what would Robert Keeley do?!

I'm slightly confused at why the previous band had it at 8 though, as when I soundchecked with it (again without a cab) I got good mix at 3! (We play heavy blues/stoner, and they were playing gentle clean stuff!) Strange!

Anyway, we digress! What Eminence shall I get?

I've heard good things about Eminence speakers; never tried one, though. I have an old Bandit and I like the transparency of it, the same as you do. I bought it used with an Electrovoice SRO speaker in it 20 years ago, and it's still my main amp. The Eletrovoice sounds simply amazing, but thier hard to find, expensive and really, really heavy (huge ceramic magnet). My bandit weighs more than twice as much as stock one.

I've also played a Celestion Vintage 30 in an open back 1x12quot; combo and that sounded great, as well. This was a tube amp, though. If you decide to upgrade, look at the 50 watt Traynor tube combos. They retail for under $900 CDN and they come stock with the Celestion Vintage 30 and Sovtek tubes (not cheap stuff!). There's a version with 6L6 tubes (Fender type sound) and a version with EL34 tubes (Marshall type sound). I cranked the EL34 version out pretty good in my local store a few days ago and was blown away. Sounded way bigger than a 1X12 combo.

Hmm... I can only see EL34 versions and quot;Sovtek 5881WXT beam power tubesquot; versions. Or are they similar to 6L6?

True.

Anyhoo, Legend V12 (120W) or Legend 121 (150W)?!

I read that the Legend 121 had more headroom before break up and that's just what I need, so I ordered one!

Thanks for the feedback amigos!

It's not always volume that causes speakers to blow up, you may have a problem with the amp, or, Did the guy unplug his guitar w/o turning down the vol first? any time an amp goes DC, the speaker will be the first to go. Also, even tho it's rated at 75 watts, most speaker manufactures rate their spkrs at a much lower wattage rating, for liability reasons.
