What do you guys think is a better bang for your $$ for a set neck, 2 humbucker guitar. A pickup change would be in order, so that is not too important. Their both fat bodied, mahogany, set neck guitars, with the biggest difference being a tail piece on the Paul, and string through on the SZ. I play mostly KISS, ZZ Top, some 80's metal, Motley Crue, etc. Nothing too heavy. Which one should I get?

The SZ. I like the neck better, and it's got bigger frets. They cost less, too.

I have owned both. I returned the Epi for quality issues, I still play my SZ520 nearly every day. I upgraded the pickups with the JB/Jazz combo. This is a very solid piece. Dollar for dollar I don't think you could do better. Next upgrade, some locking Sprezels. Good luck in your search.

I too prefer the SZ to the Epiphone's. Unless you are talking about the Elite series. But you should check out Burny, Tokai, Greco and Edwards as well. All make excelent copies of the LP. Good luck.

They're both drastically different body styles. I don't think either would play horribly. The Ibanez almost certainly has a thinner neck and bigger frets. Ibanes would be more for speed probably or easier for speed anyway. The Ephiphone would probably fit your style more cosmetically, not that that matters. I would go with the Ibanez but I'm not really a fan of Epiphone.

SZ. I have one on Ebay right now. My job ended and I need money to pay bills and such.

That was a nice one, frankencat. I really like it! How does it play?

It plays great but the tone, MAN!! This thing just oozes tone. It definitely has the LP thing happening but it goes more places than an LP can go. It's got a '59/PG combo and it can sing or scream or purr. It has been my #1 studio axe for the past few months but like I said, I need the cash or else I wouldn't sell it. I wish I had something else to sell but my other axes have too much sentimental value and I promised I wouldn't sell them. I have some other stuff for sale as well. This is an absolute steal IMHO and I am taking a big hit on the re-sale. I just need the cash and this is the only one I have to sell so...

Believe me, if my next contract comes through in the next week or so it will not be for sale any more

Peace -Frank

Too bad you have to sell it. Hope you find a way to keep it.

Thanks

Ibanez SZ520 by far.... Just hold the guitars side by side you can feel the quality differance. There is no comparison... IMHO of course

*punches self in face™*

This thread is almost a year old, I'm sure he made his desicion already.

For future reference see the McCarty vs. Paula thread

I've hated every epi les paul I've ever played. Felt more like a toy than an instrument, and sounded and felt cheap and awkward.

1 for the SZ. own 2 already... considering a 3rd.

if you value:
*upper fret access
*superb playability

the SZ will be rewarding.
