What are the tonal qualities of ash?
It's brighter than alder. This is all I know.
To my ears swamp ash has prominent bass and treble, where alder has mids. It is brighter, but also more bassy than alder. I think the different types of ash have different tonal qualities, I only know swamp ash. I like it as a tone wood. I think it is really great for Teles because the bass response somewhat balances out the biting tendencies of a Tele tone. I think it adds meat to the tone.
Ash vibrates like crazy. It feels so alive sitting on your hip when your playing. Hit a power chord and it feels like one of your video game controllers that vibrates...pretty cool.
