A lot of the younger guitars that I teach ask me what Overdrive pedal they should get and I'm always a bit stumped. The reason being that they play cheaper solid state amps like the Peavey Rage or a Marshall MG and I don't really know what will sound good with these amps. I think I know a bit about what will sound good with valve amps and I hope I usually make valid recommendations based on what sort of sound they describe in conjuction with their guitar for these students. (Phew!)

Do any manufacturers produce pedals for these types of amps?

Is it simply the case that the pedals that sound good through a valve amp will sound reletively as good through a solid state amp?

Or do some pedals perform better through cheaper amps than the pedals commonly used for valve amps?I hope this isn't to vague. I don't really know how to be more specific. Erm... I guess what I'm asking is if a younger, beginner-level guitarist, with a reletively low budget and cheaper equipment generally, asked you what overdrive pedals you'd recommend, what would you tell him/her?

Thanks,
-Benja

Also, digitech bad monkey...

If you want a pedal to use with a solid state amp, you'll want a pedal with tubes in it. Unfortunately, I can't think of a single tube equipped pedal that's cheap. I'm pretty sure just about any standard, non-tube equipped pedal will sound like ass through a SS.

They might not be able to truely replicate the actual tone of a tube amp, but some cheaper OD pedals can greatly help the tone of solid state amps.

Sorry for ignoring all the suggestions you and others have made. I've heard a lot of very good things about the Bad Monkey but as of yet, no, I've never tried one out at all. Although this does seem to be another one of those 'if you put through a decent amp, it sounds amazing' type pedals.

I think what I was really hoping for with this thread was people who have a lot more experiance with pedal/amp combinations pitching in with some general points about the 3 questions I asked in my first post. I know, should have named the thread differently, sorry.

Cheers,

I don't have a lot of experience with SS amps or a lot of pedals.

BUT...what I've noticed is if you can get a good clean tone out of an amp, most pedals will only help. Granted, you won't get a full stack Marshall sound out of an MG amp; a Digitech pedal, but you should get a liveable tone.

Regretably, it's a crapshoot. What sounds good thru one guys amp might sound like crap thru another guys amp. Hell, go to Harmony Centrals classifieds or E-bay amp; look at how many pedals are for sale.

They obviously didn't work for someone for whatever reason....but they might be exactly what someone else is looking for.

I hope that may have helped a little.

BTW.....might I suggest a TECH21 Tri-AC amp; a speaker upgrade
