I have a 7-string ESP, Stephen carpenter signature model and am not real happy with the default EMG 81-7 active pickups and electronics. I am new to the whole quot;switchin' outquot; pickups game, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions (hardware-wise) on how I could tighten up the low B string for better clarity. I really wanna enhance my mids and highs for better sustain and harmonic response. Right now, the silencing effect of the EMG's seems to block out any quot;organicquot; feel, it's almost mechanical-like. I was also wondering how I could go about getting a coil tap installed onto the guitar and how much that would cost me. Thanks for any help anyone could give me.

What kind of amp are you using?

Basically, you wont be able to put in passive pickups without it looking like complete ass.

I'd go with some 707's; I love mine. They're the best pickups I've ever used. They sound more organic than the 81's, for sure. They have a great ballsy low-mid growl, as well.

Is it the SC607 baritone or standard? The standard might sound flabby on the low B, no matter what. I personally hate 25.5 scales for 7 strings.

Yes, it is the SC607 Baritone-string thru, my amp is an old piece of crap but for the most part I listen directly thru the headphones, I have it hooked straight to my Digitech GNX-2 floor unit.....sounds better than thru the amp. I sort of thought it would look like ass, I have been looking thru these duncan 7 string pickups and really man I don't which to go with, or even if Duncan is the way to go, my friend got the Evolution 7 and Tone Zone 7 Dimarzio's on his and the **** sounds great, but I always heard that Duncan is the way to go. I will check out the 707's though thanks for the tip. I am not sure if it's the active pickup thing or what, like I said man I play but I am new to the hardware.

You may also want to try an 18V mod on the EMGs.. opens up the tone quite a bit, that should counteract the quot;mechanicalquot;ness a bit
