wise pple of the forum,

how heavy is a strat compared to an sg? i own a strat from yamaha and played sg's in shops. the thing is i cant judge how heavy they are in comparison to one another until i've used them for hours standing.
so whats your opinion? if the sg lighter how much lighter?

I'd say sgs are lighter over all than strats, their bodies are super thin

i'd say about even, SG may be just a little heavier

If you have no problem playing your strat, you'll be fine with an SG...

I've had both, SGs are lighter.

I thought that strats were lighter - but the SG that I've played is Voodoo, which (I think) is a different wood to most SGs. Also, I spend most of my time shouldering a 335, which is a bulky, heavy chunk of wood, so anything is light compared to that!

Depends on the guitar...I have some strats that are heavier than my SG,but I have other strats that aren't..The SG is pretty close in weight to a strat though...I'm thinkin around the 7 lb. range..

Mahogany(I think is generally a heavier wood)...Still depends on the plank of wood that particular SG or strat is made from? The weights do vary a bit..My alder bodied American Deluxe strat you see in my avatar is pretty heavy,but my blue alder bodied Highway 1 strat is very light by comparison..I mean big differences..You'd almost think my AD was mahogany if you lifted it up,but it's alder..

Voodoo SGs are swamp ash, which is a fairly light ash, less dense than the normal mahogany SGs. And try playing my '76 LP Custom, which tops out at about 13 pounds, if you wanna talk heavy.

....Ya know, thinking about this a bit, there might not be a lot of difference between the two. My SGs feel about the same as my idiot Strat, which is Alder. There were, however, some Strats made in the 70's that weighed a ton! I don't own any, but they may have changed the woods those years, because those puppies were solid as hell. I think it may just depend on the plank of wood that they were using.

i thought mahogany was very porous and less dense. Isn't that why it takes so much wood to make a les paul in the ball park of 8-9 lbs?

My american deluxe strat is pretty heavy, but it is not cumbersome at all. Fits me like a glove and balances like a charm.

Wouldnt it depend on a lot of variables. For instance, the 70's and 80's LP's weighed a ton!!! I supposed the SG's from that period weighed alot also.

ok.. how abt a yamaha pacifica alder , the lower range PAC112 vs the SG Standard (of course we're comparing weights here,not the quality )?

i'm so concerned cos i dun wanna get a guitar (the SG) which gives me backaches. even with my current pacifica i cant play like 3 or 4 hours straight standing.

I'm not sure I can add to what's already been said. It comes down to the wood type, hardware weight, and so on. I like a Strat because of how balanced the guitar is and the contours of the body that make it one of the most - if not THE most - comfortable guitars to play ever made. That might go a long way in determining which to use. I'd say a lightweight Strat - maybe one made with true southern swamp ash - might be the way to go. If your back is in really bad shape, you might need to go with a Parker Fly. I know players either hate 'em or love 'em, but I really like mine. I read that Mark Farner, who is the guitarist for the band, Grand Funk Railroad, has ongoing back problems and uses a Parker Fly so he can do live performances without being in severe pain.

the SG is a lil bit lighter from what i can tell

the SG faded i owned was lighter than both my MIM cray hardtail strat and my USA hardtail strat

The Supreme SGs are heavier than the studios but I think even to an American strat.
It deends on the body material. Mahogany is heavier than Ash but Sgs are quite thin. And I am pretty sure that Drew has never touched an Sg

i'm presuming the pacifica is of heavier material. Typically speaking, the more premium a gibson is, the lighter the wood. Expensive LP's are lighter because they pick less dense mahogany and sometimes chamber it to get the balance they want. I'm presuming the cut of mahogany gibson chooses for the SG standard is lighter and more resonant than the wood that Yamaha would cut for a Pacifica.
