I see each spelling as often as I see the other, but all of the current and recent models I've seen have sported the -er spelling.
I know the Squier brand has had a relatively complicated history (I'll never forget how confused I was the first time I saw an MIM Squier...) so has the spelling changed over the years or do people just flip the last two letters around because they're used to word squire (or esquire...) being spelled -re?
Squire = knight's apprentice in the Middle Ages
Squier = brand of guitar owned by Fender (possibly the founder's last name?)
That's all I know on the subject.
Everyone always pronounces it Squire, but i pronounce it like the offensive word for a homosexual with an S in front.

Dont know the history of the official spelling, but one of my friends was under the impression that the Squier brand was actually named after Billy Squier,
who was an early 80's rocker! He was dead serious!
When I started playing guitar he told me to go down to Guitar Center and pick up quot;one of those Billy Squiersquot; !
I knew that wasn't the case but he was so sure of it I didn't have the heart to tell him!
Or maybe it was!
I think this is a good one for the Fender Forum.
its Squier!!!!! the guys ****ing name was Squier (lat I beleive).. it pisses me off when people go Squire
The Fender/Squier name has been around for decades...since the 60's. Fender used to market Squier strings when I was a kid. Has zero to do with Billy Squier! Might have some loose connection with the Esquire guitar? Lew
The reason you see Squire is because people can't spell for ****.
Actually, the spelling here isn't as bad as it is on a lot of forums I've been to.
Billy Squier goes back to the old Boston rock scene of the early 70s- the Sidewinders, I want to say he was in Angel as well... Not that I know squat about the Boston rock scene.
Go ro fender eurpos for the story on SQUIER.
They spell fine. The problem is they CAN'T READ! Then they 'spell' what they 'read.'

Squire is a real word. Look it up.
Here is the
Link to Fender Europe Story. It even mentions Hendrix playing Squier Esquire Strings!

I realize that, but quot;squirequot; is a much more common word than the name quot;Squierquot; and therefore people will not pay attention to the proper spelling.

That's a really interesting story- I've never heard that before. Notice the ad says quot;Esquier Stringsquot; though the text in the story says quot;Squier Esquire...quot;
