Can it? The majority of the people I know use mostly the bridge pup. So, I was wondering if there was a pickup or wireing mod or anything I can do to get my neck and middle pickups to sound more like a bridge pickup (more definition, cutting, ect)?

I have a C-5 bridge that I really like, a JB Jr. mid, and a lil 59 neck. I have 500 K pots and I think I have a .22 cap on it.

I know this is a rookie question, but I'm really intrested in if this can be done.

You mean like a bridge humbuker? Or like a humbuker?? or ......what??(this maybe be an obvious/smart(as in smartass] remark but im gonna make it anyways)] isnt that what bridge pickups are for?....to sound like bridge pickups????

you can bypass the tone control for your neck pickup, but i doubt that this will help.

It's an interesting idea, but I don't think it'll work. Even an EMG 81 in the neck does NOT sound like a bridge pickup.

I'd like to see if any members know if I can get my neck and middle pick ups to sound more like a bridge pickup because I like the sharper more defined sound. Instead of having one 'bridge' sound, I'd like to see if I can get my other pick up to sound like a 'bridge' pickup. Like getting an ACDC sound out of a neck or middle pickup for example.

This is as good as I can explain it.

IMHO: No. You can go a bright and cutting as you want with the neck oickup, and even the darkest bridge pickup will still slice it´s face right off. The reason the positions sound so different is because the strings vibration is a MUCH larger arc at the height of the neck pickup than it is at the height of the bridge.

In Short: If you can get the string to vibrate quot;in reversequot;, with the largest part of the ellipse at the ends and the quot;resting pointquot; in the middle of the playing length, then you can. But the bridge will now sound like the neck

any other thoughts?

I wonder why no one has figured out a way to make a neck sound clearer and more cutting? I'm sure there is a way to do it some how.

There are plenty of clear, cutting neck pickups. The aforementioned EMG 81 totally fits that bill. Have you tried using really hot bridge pickups, adjusted as close to the strings as possible? Perhaps some type of active tone shaping electronics, to cut out some bass?

And dont forget to claim your novel price in physics....

some people , change one pot to a push pull or rewire their 5 way switch , so they can select the neck and bridge pickup together if you´re in a 3 pickup setup Johnny

why don't you just use the darn bridge pickup? I have yet to see a guitar (apart from jazz boxes) that don't come with a bridge pickup position.

No.

If you think about it the bridge pickups are, in general, darker sounding comparing to the neck pickups...

As Zerberus explained the strings have a much more trebly tone near the bridge than they have close to the fingerboard. To compensate this, bridge pickup model have more bass response to avoid sounding too treble. (In the same maner the neck pickups have more treble response to compensate being close to the fingerboard).

So if you put a bridge pickup in the neck you'll end up with a much warmer tone than you already have because they have more bass response than a neck pickup. I've tried a JB in the neck spot and it was a very dark pickup.

You can't get a bridge pickup tone from the neck but you can make your neck sound trebly and sharp. Try treble neck pickup... Jazz?

Good luck!!

Well u can try using brighter pickups in the neck like the JAZZ. or like the Dimarzio Humbucker from hell. Also U can avoid using a tone control on the neck pick up and use a seprate volume control with a trebel bleed mode. But even then it wld not sound like a pickup in the bridge postion, as alredy expalined by the others there is less string vibration at the bridge . But if u r looking for a tone that is not muddy but clear at the neck then try the jazz or the Humbucker from Hell.

why not just use your bridge pickup if thats the tone you're going for? as it's already been explained, the tone of the strings is totally different as you move from the bridge to the fretboard, it's just the nature of the instrument. and that's the beauty of having multiple pickups in different spots on the guitar, you get access to multiple tones at the flick of a switch.

what kind of guitar do you have? if your guitar has single coils, then perhaps humbuckers will provide the tone you're describing.

Thanks to the people who provided insight like Zerberus I'll be thinking about a jazz. And I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but let me explain why I asked again. For example, if you had two guitars Exactly alike and you had different pickups in their respective bridges (Say a C-5 in one and a JB in the other) they would sound different. And say they both sounded good. still follow. To get the different sounds you would have to switch guitars, right? Who wants to switch guitars all of the time? Not me. SO, for example It would be cool to have a guitar that could get BOTH the sound of a JB (bridge sound) and a C-5 (bridge sound). Having a scooped 'bridge' sounding pup and a really middy 'bridge' sounding pup.

I know most of you guys that replied got this point, but this is for the people who skimmed the thread and decided to post something anyway.
