I'm GASSING again, this time I have a strat in my head. I want the guitar to have a balls to the wall, EVH tone from the bridge, so I need to decide between an HSS model or a regualr Strat. What's the diff beween the stacked single coils like the Lil '59 and JB Jr and the actual Humbucking versions? And is there still a big diff quality/soundwise btw the Mexican/Japanese Strats and the American versions?

If you want EVH tone you want a Strat with a bridge humbucker...you will not get EVH tone from a Strat with three single coils or three single coil size humbuckers. You want a Strat with a full size humbucker like a Duncan 59, Custom, Custom Custom, or similar pickup. I use 59 Trembucker bridge pickup in my EVH style Strat. Lew

Thanks for the info Lew. Let me ask you this - if I did go with a humbucker in the bridge, would I still be able to get those glassy clear tones ala Hendrix quot;Castles Made of Sandquot; when playing clean? Or would a bucker throw that off?

Thanks as usual!!

Well, also the nice thing about a fat strat, or any strat routed for a bridge humbucker is... You can always convert to a s/s/s if you want to.

You would if you got a Strat with two vintage style alnico 5 pickups like the Duncan SSL-1 neck and middle pickup...those are the two pickups I use to get those tones: the neck and middle. Then go with something like the 59 Trembucker as the bridge pickup. If I were you, I'd look for a USED but great playing Fender Japan 80's Strat with a S/S/HB pickup set-up and a vintage style non-locking vibrato for around $400 or less and then I'd put new pickups in it. There's some great 80's MIJ Fender Squires that would do the trick and I see them on Ebay for $300 or less. Some of my favorite Strats in my stash are 80's MIJ Squires...they are nicer than many US made Strats.

Great advice from Lewguitar. If you wanna go new, $299 sale price at MF on the Korean Fender Showmaster. Comes stock with a '59 bridge. I just picked one up for the same reason you want one-for EVH stuff. Sounds great through an EL34 based amp.

$299? The lowest price I saw at MF was $629!

They must have sold them all out. It was the Blackout edition. I know some people from this forum picked some up also. Sorry!

OK, here's where it stands. This guy wants to sell me this MIM Standard Strat for btw $225-$250. It's a S-S-S but it's so damn nice looking (love the Arctic White) that I was thinking of just routing the bottom so it fits a bucker. Would you guys move on this or wait it out for a Japanese Squire to pop up on Ebay?
(I'm trying to upload a photo but I'm having probs...)

Speaking of the 1980's Fender Squires...do they come in a s-s-H configuration? All the ones I've seen on Ebay have 3 singles.

Looks pretty cool...Dump some Duncans in it and your set.
