Seasons greetings tone bro's, I'm looking for an affordable 335 style guitar and I've seen and heard a lot of good things
said about Hamer guitars here on the forum, so I'd like your thoughts and opinions please. Thanks.
Does anyone know where the lower-end HAMER's are manufactured?
Would you rather have a 335 style guitar made of mahogany or maple? Maple is the cheaper priced.
One has HAMER buckers, the other one has Duncan Designed buckers; this might be irrelevant if I drop some Seth's in there
but which of these two would you get?
from : localhost/I just save up for one made in U.S.A.?
Thanks a lot!
Jeff
Honestly you could probably get a really good deal on a used USA one. I bought a Hamer Monaco Elite on ebay (from that exact same store btw!) brand new, with warranty and tags, for under $1500. (they retail for 3500 I think? and usually sell for around 2500 new) I have no idea on the non usa made Hamers, but I absolutely love mine. And VL was very nice to deal with.
I had one of the Echotone guitars. Man I regret ever getting rid of that guitar! That's the only real guitar regret I've ever had. I got rid of it for something I thought I liked better and I was wrong. They're really good guitars, built well and feel nice. Change the pickups and the tuners and you have a KILLER instrument!
Ive heard that the Heritage 535 is good too.
I used to have a Hamer USA Standard. Never should have got rid of it.
i played one of those with the DD pickups (i think it had those, not sure)
but for the price i was really, really impressed. Even the stock pickups were pretty good. Get a bigsby amp; yeah new tuners, and i'd say you're set
i also tried the goldtop one with p-90's amp; thought it was pretty decent, but the 335 one sounded a little better to me
FWIW my preference would be to wait for a used made-in-the-USA Hamer or a Heritage.
There's a lot more skill involved in making a good semi-hollow body than a solid body guitar, and the materials (i.e. wood) are more important too.
Just my humble opinion.
Chip
P.S. I found a used Hamer about 2 months after buying my Heritage 535 and wish it had been 2 days before...
There's a article in the new Guitar Player magazine about buying one right on ebay. The guy loved it. You can always move up to a USA later (because once you buy one Hamer, you'll have to get more, and more and more...)
