Buzz the top off of a woodscrew and countersink it into the fretboard, shape it to the board and polish out.
Sounds simple but it is a ton of work, shaping the bottom of the screws so they fit but not to the point where they seat below the fretboard surface.Keep in mind that the fretboard is cambered and the screwhead is flat.
Then carefully shape the head and the fretboard.
When I first heard this idea I thought that it was interesting but wasn't sure how it would look.I stand corrected,it looks killer.
Couple of tips though-clamp the screw head, not the shaft, into the vise,(or you get to play a rousing game of 'Where's the partquot;).
-don't cut all the way through the screw, the metal heats up and comes off like a bullet.
-use a Dremel off cut wheel,(it stripped blades on 3 different types of saws in a matter of seconds-also stupid here forgot his and had to grind it down and then snap the shaft, then regrind the bottoms.
-be careful how much you grind off of the bottom,(I forgot about the driver slot and cut right through one. There's no fixing it either, just start over)
-bore the fretboard slowly,( we kept fitting and boring.Took a long time but we had no disasters)
-superglue dries fast,(dummy here became Edward Plierhand for a few minutes)
It'll be finished tommorrow, hopefully get a few pics up then.
Sounds interesting though I cant quite picture it in my head. I would love to see it. BTW, I just used your method on a customers all maple tele neck using the brass rings. Looks like butter!!!!! I just pressed the frets in and I cant wait to show him tomorrow.

Well, now they're metal wood screws.
i seen it done, looks pretty cool
that's funny, one of the ideas for the twisted caster was origionaly going to be polished screw heads to replace the dots...i decided to do the iron crosses on it instead. but i have another guitar i planned on doing the screw head inlays in. you beat me to it hehehe.

All done, just needed a few more hours of hand shaping and polishing.
And for the record I only charged $30.00,(tax in),that included tightening, double checking the set-up,a light crown and polish, and I split that with the shop.
He wanted to trade me a JB,but I thought that I would have been ripping him off.
Jeff said that he's going to pick it up tommorrow,so hopefully he's got a digital camera,(believe me the photography work is best left to someone other than me.Unless you'd like to see my Polariod collection of thumb close-ups )
... like Steve Vai's industrial JEM.
