Anyone ever tried those? They are in the TSL 60X Combos...

bump... anyone? no?

They are not so good...........infact one of the best things to do so as to improve the tsl combos tone is to change the speaker (and the premp tubes)

What preamp tubes/speakers do you recommend? I have a TSL 601 with a Wolverine and it can sound a bit quot;clinicalquot; at times.

I did not like the sound of the Wolverine, at all. Sounded cheap, to my ears.

What does quot;clinicalquot; sound like? Do you mean quot;hi fiquot; or flat sounding perhaps?
Lacking of something?

Exactly, not the organic roar I'd expect from 60 watts of Marshall. Good sounds not great.

Almost sounds like a quot;modelledquot; version of a Marshall.

In fact, the sound I've been using most recently is my V-amps version of a JCM 800!

Regarding the speaker i would say a V30 would be a good idea.....the problem is i have only tried it in closed back cabs..........and everybody seems to say that the v30 lacks bass and does not sound tight in open back combos like the TSL601........anyway....almost any celestion speaker would be an improvement over the wolverine............

Right know i am experimenting with preamp tubes .......throw away that no name crap marshall has put in there......I tried EH 12ax7 and it gave a nice quot;marshallyquot; sound but they added quite a lot of treble frequencies i did not like and made the amp sound a little bit thin......I tried JJ ecc83s which i didn't like too.......The best results i had were with some svetlanas 12ax7 and some ruby tubes..........I've still got to try the GT ......

I'm certainly thinking a V30 is the way forward. Pre amp valves could be a trickier proposition.

Thanks for your opinions once again guys!

One last word from me...............one of the things you MUST do with the tsl range so as to have a good tone is to keep the master volume above 6......it performs much better in high volumes......also don't be afraid to keep the treble control on the lead/crunch channel very low even as low as 2........same about the presence control..............and do NOT use the shift and deep buttons(unless you want to play scooped numetal crap).....

The only thing I've not done on your list is to keep the treble low. I'll give it a try. Thanks.
