Is there any problem with rusting the tips of the pole pieces of my single coil strat pups (ssl-1 seymour duncans)

i want it to look like my friends real 60's strat where the pole pieces are rusted.. and what would you do to acheive this affect?

1) No problem except that it could in theory mess with the sound a bit (but not much at all).
2) If I wanted mine rusted, I'd set them outside this winter. The water will eventually cause them to rust. However, I'm talking like for a month or more. Depends.

thanks

and leaving them outside would not damage them..?

I could get a small bowl of water and set the pickups upside down into them so that just the tips of the pole pieces are placed in the water. and every day take them out to dry, and the next day put them back in

i did this with some screws on this strat and it rusted em pretty well, im just worried about damaging the pickup

put some tape around the thread and leave em outside. I shouldnt think that it would damage the sound

Keep playin' that guitar and get lots of sweat and beer on it, and never wipe it off. They'll rust in no time.

Seriously though, and I'm just using common sense here, when was the last time rust did anything GOOD???? Rust on metal = bad. It eats it. Magnets are made of metal. Over time, the rust will have an effect, one you won't like. Keep 'em clean.

Alternately, you might be able to buy paint that simulates the rusted look....

It's really pretty simple---a little HCL carefully applied to the top of the polepiece. Let sit...instant rust. DON'T GET IT ON THE COILS. If you want to oxidize a bunch of parts, lay them out on a wad of 4 or 5 paper towels with some white vinegar on it in a Tupperware container---will do the job overnight. It'll smell like vinegar for a little while...
