Hey guys.

I have my Bareknuckles wired up in my Gordon Smith guitar, but what I didn't notice is that the legs of the pickups are a fair bit longer than those of the pickups I had in the guitar before. The mounting screws don't appear to be long enough for me to lower the pickup height in the mounting ring.

It appears that the pickup cavity is also not routed deeply enough to accept these 'longer leg' pickups, although I'm not 100% sure on this.

Does anyone have any advice at all about what I could do?

I paid to have the pups fitted so I'd hate to have thrown my money away by taking them out again

Craig

get some longer screws.

I hate to break it to you, but if the cavity isn't deep enough to mount the pickups at the proper height, your choices are:

1. Have a luthier route the pickup cavities deeper
2. Swap the baseplate for one with shorter legs
3. Carefully use a dremel tool to cut out a section of the mounting legs, then superglue the mounting tabs back on.

I don't know why anyone makes pickups with long legs anymore...I guess it's an attempt to remain faithful to the vintage design, but they won't fit in all guitars.

what exactly is up man? are the pups in the guitar already?

when i installed EMGs and got this problem, i snipped about 7mm off the end of the screw.. worked fine for me..

I'm still going to have to find someone I trust with a chisel before I can use the guitar though

Anyone have any tips for slightly deepening the pickup cavity?

The screws that mount the pickup to the ring don't appear to be long enough. Also, when the pickup and ring are on the guitar, the pickup ring has to be bent before it'll screw into the body of the guitar.

It's like the cavity isn't deep enough and there's nowhere for the pickup to go but up

If that makes sense?

Thanx for the post Ryan.

Those are all good ideas.

The 1st idea I had was to get someone to slightly route the cavity a little deeper for me, although the idea about the baseplate with shorter legs is a good idea too

I'll contact the pickup manufacturer and see what they have to say.

Craig

I just had the same problem. My 59n was too tall to fit in the cavity of my Godin.I happened to have a set of Duncan Designeds and I just switched a base
plate.Everything matched perfectly ,only now my 59 says its an HB103n.Works fine and sounds even better.

Tim at Bareknuckle Pickups has offered to switch the baseplate of my pickups for 1's that have shorter legs, so atleast I have that option open to me

I would go with that option, saves defacing that nice Gordon Smith of yours...

Thanx for the replies guys.

I also gave John Smith at Gordon Smith Guitars a ring and he said that it's a very common problem on his guitars. He said all I need to do is a 'drill around a bit with a 1/2 inch drill and it'll fit'

So I think I'll give that a try 1st. Even I should be able to drill a hole and I'm a moron

Yeah, I think best is go for the least agressive option (expecially if it's reversible)... you allways will have the chance to ruin your guitar .

Good luck!!!

I'll be getting the drill out over the next few days, so hopefully I can report on what the Bareknuckles sound like sometime next week.

Craig

Hey again guys.

I've drilled the holes slightly deeper for the pickup legs to rest in, and it's made little to no difference!

One thing I did notice (thanx to TO for the info) was that BK Pickups use longer magnets than Pickups, and it was these screws that was stopping the fitting of the bridge pickup! I've drilled these holes deeper and the bridge pickup is now inplace

The neck pickup however is a different story..............

There appears to be a slab of wood about 2mm thick in the middle of the neck pickup cavity and the neck pickup appears to be resting ontop of this slab, hence it won't raise or lower within the mounting ring.

So atleast now I know that the problem isn't to do with the longer legs of the pickup, and also what needs doing inorder to get the pickup to fit

Craig

After drilling the holes for the pickup magnet screws to fit into, I've managed to get the bridge pickup installed and working fine.

I bought a Dremel type tool yesterday, so my plan for today is to sand down the inside of the neck pickup cavity so that the neck pickup will fit.

I'll report back how I like the pups when I get them fitted.

Craig

Hey again guys.

I've sanded down the indisde of the pickup cavity and the pup still won't rest low enough in the guitar!

The pickup must be hanging up around the edges or something, so I'm taking it to a friend to see if he can help me troubleshoot what might be causing the hang up.

I'm still hoping to have the pickups working by later on today though
