Hey everone, I just joined the forum (Let the hazing begin!). I'm looking for some advice on a new bridge humbucker for my guitar. It's a Jackson KE3 Kelly with an alder body, maple neck, and floyd rose. I have an EMG 81 in the bridge right now. I also recently just bought a Peavey Triple X half stack and the guitar is now sounding extremely thin. It had more balls so to speak with my PODXT. I'm also pretty sure that any pickup will sound close to the same with the POD anyway. So i'm looking to replace it. I was thinking of going back to passive pickups and trying the Invader because of its larger bass output to counter the bright nature of my guitar. But I also have heard great things about the EMG 85 in the bridge having more warmth a fuller sound than the 81. Plus since one of my favorite bands (In Flames) uses the 85 i was curious about it. But then again Nile uses the Invader and their tone is massive. So has anybody had any experience with these two pickups in a guitar with similar specs to mine (alder, floyd rose)?

Thanks for the help, it's very appreciated.

Throw an 85 in there, trust me.

In my guitar an 81 sounds thin too, i put an 89 in it (coil tappable 85) and it thickened it up BIG time. Take everything you hate about the 81, then fix it, and thus is the magic of the 85.

Thanks a lot Mephis. Just what I was looking to find out.

Would also like to hear about the Invader from someone before I make my purchase, but the 85 sounds like it's gonna do exactly what I need.

Welcome to the Forum. No hazing here.....unless you bring it on yourself

Trust me, you've found the best Forum on the Net.Jeff

Some say the Invader can be very muddy, and sometimes have too much bass. They also say that it sucks for soloing. However this is purely hearsay, as I have no experience with this pickup. I think if you like In Flames, and you have a Peavey half stack, get the EMG 85.

Thanks a lot for the replies. Going with the 85
