I just bought two new pickups for my telecaster and I was wondering if i should install them myself or take them to a guitar tech? I am a very good solderer (spelling?) but is that all there is to it? do I just take out the old and reinstall the new the same way? Some one said that I have to make sure that the two pickups are in Phase, what does that mean and how do i do it? sorry if theese q's are dumb but please help!!!
Welcome to the forum
Your questions are valid and in reality no its not that hard to swap pickups. You state your proficient at soldering thats the bulk of the effort so if you got that and you can follow the wiring diagrams you should be gold. Essentially the pickups should go in exactly the way the old ones came out. But the wiring colour codes may be different. Most wiring diagrams for the various pickups are available on the net or just ask. As far as phasing goes that usually only happens when mixing pickups from different manufacturers. and if it does need to be switched its no problem to do it. Exactly which pickups are you putting into your tele?

it's not terribly hard .. i did it recently (i used duncans) ... follow the color code provided with your pickups ... the hardest thing i encountered was installing the new neck pickup ... it was hard to get the pup to go in straight (it wanted to lean towards the neck) ... i had to fuss with it quite a bit ... adjusting the height was a pain too because i had to repeatedly take the pickguard off and replace it in order to check the distance ... i was nervous about dealing with the bridge, but it turned out to be a piece of cake (i taped the position before removing it)
good luck

If you can use a screwdriver and a soldering iron then you're able to change pups, you just have to mind the guitar finish.
