Has anyone out there ever replaced stock Jensen speakers with Weber speakers in their Fender amp?

- Keith

I'll take that as a quot;No.quot;

Well, I had a call two days ago from the Jensen rep. He was trying to quot;sellquot; me on the Jensen line. I had to honestly tell him that no one asks for them when I build them an amp. They ask for Webers, Celestions and Emminences. But mostly it's Webers when I get a request.

Here's what I like about Weber. I send him an email for an opinion on a speaker selection. I've normally got it narrowed down to 2-3 choices and then I take his input and its always one of my choices. (and he doesn't know my choices ahead of time). So far, I've not made a bad choice with a Weber speaker. That one we put in your Caitlin was a great match. I'm hoping the one I ordered for my new princeton reverb is the bomb as well.

But, here's the deal. I just know it's going to be the right choice. I can get along with worrying about circuit details or tubes or some part that is hard to track down. There's a convenience and confidence. When you find that, it's hard to move away to another brand.

So, yeah, Iquot;ve replaced a Jensen in a DRRI that I had briefly (I was as bad as b Bent for a while there) and put a Weber Chicago in it and was very happy.

I've found that a speaker change makes more of a difference than a tube brand change.

There is no comparision, the Webers blow the Jensens out of the water. The new Jensens are made in China and they are nothing like they used to be. Now if you could find an old one in good shape, you would have something.

I thought the new Jensens were made in Italy. Has that changed? Ted's 12quot; speakers are OK, but Celestions are better, IMO. I like some of his 10's though.

May I ask if one wanted to replace the Jensen speaker in a '65 DR, which speaker from the Eminence line would you pick? Is there an Eminence that would get you in the ballpark?

I'd get the Emi based on the Celestion G12H30. I forget which one that is. But the Celestion G12H30 is the best speaker I've ever used in a DR. I have one in both of mine and the Emi quot;clonequot; is an excellant speaker. Don't go for the one based on the Celestion Greenback...not enough bass. Lew

Which one is based on the Greenback?

The Emi equivalent of the G12H30 is the Wizard, BTW.

Linky, please.

I belive the Wizard is the H30 clone but Im gonna be completely honest...it's a good speaker but it is NOT a G12H30. I have tried several of those new Emi speakers and NOT A 1 of them holds up to a real Celestion yet. FWIW, the Private Jack is the greenback clone...

BTW, Lew is dead on...if you want to replace a Jensen in a Deluxe Reverb get an H30...adds just enough bass to the 1x12 open back cab plus they are a good bit louder than the stock Jensen making a DR powerful enough for most small gigs...

Yep...the Emi's are better than the new Jensens, and when Curly and I checked the Emi's out at NAMM I liked what I heard and I think Curly liked them too. But I don't use Emi's. I use Celestion G12H30's in my DR's and Celestion Alnico Blues in my 5E3 tweed Deluxes...and Celestions modded by Matchless in my Matchless amps. Guess I'm a Celestion kinda guy when it comes to 12's. I like them for all styles: blues, rock, country, r amp; b...they sound great for everything, not just overdriven tones.

wizards may not be exact clones but to my ears they sound amazing

most versatile amp; toneful speaker i've used to date

While Lewguitar most certainly has a wealth of experience, and he's right about the celestion speakers. Don't write off the Webers just yet! The 12 in. speak. may not be right for him, but they defineatly are for me and many other pros. They are considered an upgrade in many boutique amps. Just don't blow them off. It depends on the sound your after. If your looking for a vintage sound( probably why you picked a 5E3 ) They can't be beat! Period!

I know the original question regarded Jensens and Webers. But, since someone brought Eminence Speakers into question. Based on an email reply from Eminence, they indicate that their closest speaker to a Jensen tone is the Legend 1258.

FWIW, Based upon closer look at the Emi offerings, I'm guessing that the Eminence that's based on the GreenBack would be the Legend GB128.

And the Emi based on the V30 might be the Legend V128.

While we're propping up speakers, Mojo has some clones I really like. G12H30 is a Mojo 30H. Vintage 30 is the 30V. Greenback is the 25M. I've tried and like them all depending on the application.

The weber we put into KGM's new amp was a rather excellent example of what Weber can do.

I too will second Mojo's clones. The BV series speakers are very good clones of the originals. Perfect? No, but close enough for my dough.

The Mojo's are priced reasonably, too. I may need to give 'em a try sometime.
