a good guitar to play punk music with? i use a jackson right now and its awesome but i was thinking about getting a strat.,, any help?
Yes, strats have been used by many many punk guitarists. One of the great things about punk however is there is no one perfect guitar for punk, you could get by using humbuckers or single coils, strats being very versatile guitars they would be wonderful for punk.
Rock On !
yeah punk can be played on many different electrics i've played on my friends lp my jackson and a couple others. any punk musicians that play on strats if anyone out there knows? and i don't mean blink 182 esque bands either, like some of the older punk bands.
Billy Joe Armstrong from Green Day used a Strat with a bucker in the bridge for aaaaages, until he decided he liked p90s...
Although to be honest, a Tele might be a slightly better bet. Quite a lot of fast-paced rockers use them, and they look more 'punk' than strats, IMO. Having said that, I also don't think you can go far wrong with any guitar in punk... heck, I use my Epi335 to do Sex pistols-type stuff!
A strat is great for punk. It takes quite a thrashing. It's comfy. If you drop it, you won't be crying about your dinged f hole. And the headstock doesnt have the arched back gibson breaking area. Playing and sound considerations... versatile, tried and tested, reliable.
But the best thing about punk is that anything goes. I'd say the most punk thing to do would be to pitch up at the next practice/gig (or gig as practice) with an angry lapsteel. That'll teach em good.
I second jimbo's telecaster advice. It's even more hardwaring. and is very much quot;conformsquot; to the punk-look.
here's a guy in UK's old quot;the exploitedquot;, and he took a strat

Wise words. I don't think you'll find a style a Stratocaster won't cover.

I'm in with the Tele to be honest. Though a Strat should do too.

And as for worrying about my guitar being quot;unpunkquot; i really don't think i said i was punk, i said i want to play punk (and a lot of other things as well i add). i'm a musician first, a stereotype second. I just want to explore tones dude, no big deal just that wasn't cool telling me what my expected behavior should be. thanks for understanding though
As this forums young pop punk rocker, yes a strat would be great for punk. If you want a good punk strat with a humbucker, use the ever so popular Fender Tom DeLonge strat. @ fender.com, they have some pretty cool custom strats with the prefix SoCal- in it.
A telecaster (preferably with a humbucker in bridge or in the neck) is being used by more and more bands. Some include bands like NOFX and sum 41. Either way, a Strat(covered with stickers, maybe?) is a very good punk rock guitar. A telecaster would also be great for punk, except they're not overrated yet.
Just pick yourself up a nice 3 single coil strat... you'll find it does punk and metal and everything else!!
If you're using a jackson, break out of the box and shred like a fox!! That'd make for some good punk music

my guitar teacher has a roland synth pickup on his strat, I reckon he could get some techno sounds from it

You're may think I'm a bit quot;touchedquot;, but if money isn't a concern, look for an old Gretsch White Falcon. Billy Duffy of the Cult and Billy Zoom of X both used them extensively for a time. If money IS a concern, I'd recommend a Tele. It's hard to beat for straight-forward tone. And it's hard to argue with Joe Strummer from the Clash (mainly 'cuz he's dead, also because he used one a lot).
