Hey guys, I've been looking at getting a Mesa 2X12 Recto cab to go along with my Tremoverb combo. I figured they're good cabs and it would match my combo. However, I've been contacted by a person selling a Splawn 2X12 in my area (southwestern Ontario, Canada) for $545 USD with pickup. This cab is only 3 months old and looks to be in great shape.
I'm looking for a closed back cab to add some bottom end and punch to my open back combo. Basically I'm wondering is the Splawn a better cab to justify the higher cost? I do realize I'm saving in shipping however, and a Mesa cab could end up being the same price once it reaches my door but it will match my combo.
Any and all comments regarding these two cabs or others that are similar would be great.
Take a look here: from : localhost/at the prices for a new cab.You could probably pick your own color too.Good luck!
Jeff
Also, everything I've read on this and other forums indicate they are excellent, and a good company to deal with. I've been thinking of getting rid of my Marshall 1960B 4x12 and getting a splawn cab. I'm going to be picking up a used Splawn Quickrod head based on Dirty Craigs samples that were posted here a while back that were done with the QR and a splawn cab. I keep getting outbid though.
Take care-Jeff
The guy actually just dropped the price on the cab to ~$485 USD for the Splawn cab. So I'm definitely considering it seriously now.
He's dropping price? Hold out a bit and see how far he'll go, or make him an offer with something that you're willing to lose. For example, quot;I'll give you $400 for it, but you have to put casters on it.quot; The hope is that he'll say that he'll sell it for $400, but he won't give you the casters. You built in something that you're willing to lose with the quot;castersquot; part of the demands. See what I mean?
Do it. 1 to what Rob said.
But, if this is going to be mic'd up or in a band, get the Mesa cab. Splawn's kick ass and all, but Eminence's sound like **** mic'd up, and don't cut through in a band as well as V30's.

-Mike about a million..lol
I know the guy who's selling that..well, from the boards anyway...lol..
anywho, you can't go wrong with a splawn cab!
and from what I understand, he has celestions in there, not eminence...
but splawn cabs are the ****! I have the eminence redcoats in mine and the thing is huge and tight sounding..I love the cab..and they're built solidly as hell!Originally Posted by Lee BobHey guys, I've been looking at getting a Mesa 2X12 Recto cab to go along with my Tremoverb combo. I got some splawn clips in my signature as well..it's the soundclick link...
there's also a bunch of cool clips on the splawn site (a couple of mine are there too..as well as on rocksolidamps.com)...just to give you a better idea of how many different (GOOD!!) tones you can get out of a quick rod...good luck with the ebay search!
I think you'll be happier getting a 212 Recto cab to go with your Tremoverb. I think it will look better. And I think the Mesa cab may have better re-sale value, down the road.

XSSIVE, I've found Eminences to not cut as well as V30's in a two guitar black/deathmetal band . My experience is limited to that in that aspect.
However, and not to knock you, shreder75, but your clips aren't exactly 'studio' quality, to which I was referring to when I said that.
Have a listen to these clips done by Andy Sneap, showing the differences with two different mics. from : localhost/www.andysneap.com/media/speakers/
of course it doesn't sound studio quality...I didn't record it in a studio...
I have a ****ty recording setup and I make no bones about it..
anyway, the clip that sounds '****ty' miced up in your opinion made it on scott splawn's website as well as rocksolidamps.com in their soundclips section...people who sell these things for a living...so someone thinks it sounds good through the eminence..
I listened to the clips between the krank with the v30's and the eminence...the emenince sound so much better it's not even funny..cause as I've learned in my experiend, V30's sound like ice picks..the eminence is so much fuller..
but hey, to each his own....

Unfortunately, as I was going to call the guy saying I would take the Splawn, I got an email from him saying it was sold. Total BUMMER!
I never said your clips were ****ty...
If you like the Eminence best in those clips, great, but in a band mix, they sound like complete ass. Colin Richardson, Andy Sneap, and James Murphy can't all be wrong.

he did? sux man...for a few bucks more you could get a brand new one from scott...eminence, celestion, whatever you want!

no, you didn't come right out and say the clips are ****ty...just curious how the 'not studio quality' has anything to do with the actual speakers in my cabinet...maybe I'm missing something..
sorry, dude..not buyin' the whole 'they sound like ass' in a band mix...=) if they do it's either because of the amp runnin' through them, or the person at the end of the guitar cord...I know quite a few who use my same exact cabinet, some of which who use the same exact amp on top of it and cut right through...
I have no idea who the three guys you mentioned are..but the days of me buying gear because such and such person plays through it are long gone so it wouldn't matter anyway..lol
I've had my fair share of amps and cabinest...celestions, sheffields, more celestions, now eminence..had a mesa cab with v30's and that sounded like ass...I've had experience with both brands and I highly recommend the eminence..that's just me..like Isaid, to each his own...
I'm gonna have to go with shredder75 on this one. Even tho I'm not an Emminence fan, I've played Emminence loaded cabs on many occasions, and I would take them in a heartbeat over a cheap Peavey or Marshall cab, no matter WHAT was inside 'em.
DSS, I think that the cabinet may have been more to blame than the drivers in your experience. Even a Rivera cab with Emminence will sound better than a crapola cab with [insert high end loudspeaker name here].
I have the privelege of playing through SICK gear every week at rehearsal - Roccaforte, Diezel, VHT, Bogner, Carr, Two Rock, etc etc etc, and I think that my experience in playing in a 2 guitar high gain band situation is pretty well known. Emminence has served me just as well at rehearsals as Celestions et al. I've NEVER heard someone say they couldn't hear me!!
If Scott Splawn has voiced the cab to work with Emminence, then you can be sure that it will sound great; the man doesn't know the meaning of the word 'skimp'.

What I meant is that you're not running through a high quality recording rig, and thus the speakers will play less of a role in the overall sound
I mainly meant recorded... If you took those clips and loaded them up with a band behind it, the V30's would sound cleaner, clearer, more defined, and more upfront. If that's bad tone to you... then so be it.
I don't purchase amps or speakers based on who uses them, either, but I do take advice from those with extensive experience in the area at hand. The three guys I mentioned are 3 of the biggest producers in extreme metal.

That probably did play a big factor in my rather (limited) experience. I still find, however, that even in my Rivera cab that the V30's sound better than the Eminence copies of them. BTW and OT, but since you've had experience, how do the Rivera cabs stand up against Marshall, VHT, Etc... cabinets, soundwise?
Again, I could always hear myself, but I find that V30's always sound cleaner and clearer. But you also have to consider that I'm using a much more extreme amd modern tone than you are, in a much more extreme metal setting .
The voicing of the cabinets also has a lot to do with it, yes.
I'll admit, Eminences sound amazing in the room, but I find that when you run them through a 57 or i5 and to desk, the V30's just mic up the best.
