ive got a few, even though i dont plan on going to one anytime soon...just personal knowledge...

how much does it cost? is it hourly rates? day rates? week rates? do the prices normally include the tapes (or hardrives)? rates include engineer?

Depends on the studio with about all those questions. Most rates are hourly. If you plan to stay for a while and they are lacking business, they could give you a cheaper rate say weekly or monthly.

Prices rarely include tape or harddisk. Those are usually extra.

Some studios list their prices on their websites so go check some out.

Actually Xerxes heres a good example of a very professional studio and their rates...

gives a good run down on rates from basics to equipment to mastering.

yea, sorry for all the recording questions....im just a complete noob to this catagory and have recently become very interested....

If i were u, I'd slowly buy gear for ur own low cost studio. Get a 2 57's, some krk 5quot; rokit monitors, 2 mic cables, 2 mic stands, maybe an mbox or similar DAW, etc.
I think the mbox comes with some decent plugins too.

The Mbox is an interface to use with Pro Tools. It has two mic pre's, which can be selected for instrument or line input as well.

go to if you want to know all the specs.

yea i just checked that...the main problem (i think at least) is thta i can only have 2 mics going into it at once....for drums that oculd be interesting....

How about the Lexicon Omega studio unit? You can pick it up for under 200$ on ebay and it has 6 line ins if I recall...? Or are we on different planets?

Its not a bad unit, but its not great either. The mbox pretty much kills it in terms of sound quality, so does the mackie spike, but neither have the inputs it has so I guess its a trade off.

I didn't realize you were wanting to record an actual drum kit, so yeah you'll need at least 4 individual inputs. Thats also bear minimum as in 2 overheads and a snare and kick mic.

from : localhost/buy a MidiSport and you'll be set, I think.

that only has 2 inputs as well...

I'm not sure what you mean by card but that interface only needs firewire or usb I forget which.

As regards to rates, i think we did fairly well-

£15 per hour- which included everything, hell even got to play through a mesa dual rectifier

Samples of it- www.omissiononline.com

yea kev, that does sound sick! nice tune!
