The Gibby pups (R490 amp; T498) in my LP have gone microphonic, so I ordered a C5b amp; '59n to replace them. I just got a call from the music store amp; was told the only SD pups I can get with gold covers is the '59, Jazz amp; JB. What a bummer! I guess I could get the JB/Jazz combo, but it's not really want I want.
If I get the Gibson pups wax potted that are in there now, will that solve the microphonic problem?
Thanks
Wow... I've never heard of pickups just going microphonic out of nowhere? If you're using a tube amp you may want to check to see if one of your preamp tubes is on the way out... that's a definite sign. Another thing you can do is play through a different amp or play a different guitar through your amp to see if there's still feedback.
I put a C5 and Jazz in my LP last year and I love the tone! The C5 took a little getting used to it but I was going from EMGs so you can see why!!
Anyway, I got both uncovered and I had microphonic feedback too!!! So I bought Gold SD covers and installed them myself (MISTAKE!!!) I did wax the covers first but they didn't sit as snug as I'd like and although improved... I still get feedback!! So now I'm going to take it in to the shop. People have said that the actual pickups need to be waxed too, which I didn't do but I thought SDs came pre-waxed??
So test yours a little more then look into replacing them and if you're a novice like me then have the shop install them.
Good luck!
If they're a dealer, they should be able to pick up the phone and get you a gold C-5.
I got mine from Lew.
Yep, you can get a gold covered C-5.
Almost all SD pickups, including the C-5 are wax potted at the factory. It's not usually a big deal to get SD pickups re-potted at the factory but you need to call and get an RA (return authorization) number.
