It made me wonder..What amp did Randy use on that song? As far as pickups go, I think I remember I've seen you guys say he used DD/Jazz..I could remember wrong though, my memory sucks..But does anyone know what amp he used?
It was a 100watt Marshall head with a MXR Distortion ... not sure about the cabs but probably Marshall. On Blizzard they used a Variac and dropped down to 90 volts.

I don't think he used a DD/Jazz at that point. It was either the PAF type pickups in his Gibson or the Dimarzio Super Distortion in his Polka Dot V.
I don't think the Duncans came into the picture until he got that Jackson white V.
JCM 800 series Marshalls if I'm not mistaken.
They were the stock pickups on his Les Paul.

Yup!!!! I am glad someone got it right!!! Good old PAF goodness on that recording!
And don't forget that he triple or quadruple tracked ALL his guitar parts . It'll be pretty rough trying to hit those tones live.
I just remembered he used Altec/Lansing speakers in his 4X12's. Very clean powerful speakers.
i thought he used a JB/and i think it was Jazz

The key to the RR tone is the MXR Dist and an EQ pedal with an extreme push in the mids. He used JMP Marshall heads and matching cabs but the cabs had Altec speakers because Randy said that the Celestions turned to mud with too much gain. Crazy Train is the LP Custom and like I said before it was stock.
Damn..thanks for all your detailed explanations..Way more info that I even thought you could give me..That's great, thanks to everybody that contributed.
I'm probably in the minority but I hate his tone on Crazy Train. Great player but bad tone (uh oh, here comes trouble)

However, that's in the recording...using that same setup live(Tribute) he sounds god-like....

Very grindy tone, almost industrial sounding.......fit the song. I prefer the tone on the solo on quot; Revelation Mother Earthquot; very violin like.
Well, we obviously all have different tastes..IMO it's songs like quot;Crazy Trainquot; that made me wanna pick up the guitar and learn to play.

Randy was a huge influence on me as was the his playing on Crazy Train. It's just not a tone that I would use myself. He had killer vibrato and his left hand technique ( trills, hammers, legato phrasing ) was awe inspiring......Joe
add me to the list that hated his tone...live or studio. i like the playing, cannot get past that screechyness. certainly not 'warm' at all. oh well.
