o.k. here we go.
i am about to embark on a project guitar to get a more heavy tone ie: cantrell from aic.
i have always ran through effects and an amp, either ss or tube. i have been reading about his set-up. it says he runs through 2 pre-amps and a couple of rack power amps. i have never ran through this type of set-up. so i have no idea about any of it. so my first question is this. if i buy a pre-amp and a power amp, will i run pedals through it just like a regular amp? are there any benefits to running this type of set-up over running through a regular amp?
as i stated before, this is something i dont have a clue about, so any info or help will be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Your typical amp head contains both of those components, a preamp and a power amp. A rack setup is just a different arrangement, mainly meant for flexibility and convenience (being able to use different preamps with different poweramps for example). You would run pedals just the same way.

i am currently running through a vox valvetronix 60 head. i'm about to get a marshall 100w 800. so, if i understand correctly, i can get the same type tones from a regular amp. (with the proper settings and pedals of coarse). the seperate pre-amp and power amp set-up is just for more flexibilty about changing sounds and settings without having to have a bunch of diff traditional amps, right?
