I have a ibanez rg 421 with a maple/ rosewood neck...the guitar is a hard tail so no locking nut. My question is, if I were to replace the neck with a maple / maple neck from an Rg 550 with a locking nut would I have any problems?
I understand that the two weren't designed to work together and it would require either locking the nut and not having fine tuning capabilities (which would be a drag), or removing the nut and replacing it with a standard nut ( which I assume would require adding wood where the locking nut used to be?), or just leaving the top clamp off of the locking nut ( which I'm not sure about).

I want a maple fretboard on this guitar but it wasn't offered from the factory.
Please tell me what would be involved and what the best route to take on this.

Thanks in advance, Scott.

It should work, as long as both of the necks have the same neck joint construction (either all access neck joint or traditional style neck joint).

Yup, both all access neck joints...thanks for the help! Can anyone recommend what to do with the locking nut situation? How hard would it be to remove it and replace it with a standard nut?

I believe that Allparts makes a synthetic quot;rampquot; which can be used as a quick fix to fill in the empty space from a locking nut... although i didnt find it on their site.

You could possibly fashion a piece of wood to fill in the space, glue it on, and reslot the nut slot, but i have no experience doing so. Good luck!

Thanks for the effort! I'll let you know what happens...
