Eddie claimed in an interview that he doesn't use a neck pup because to get the neck pup sounding good, you'd compromise the tone of the bridge pup. While I don't totally agree with his philosophy, I think he does tend to stick to the bridge pup for the most part. However, on their last tour, he was wearing out a Fernendez Sustainer in the neck on a couple of songs, so he doesn't use the bridge exclusively.

What bridge pup are you using, so we don't suggest a neck pup that doesn't compliment it well.

The early VH stuff was done with a PAF that came out of a early 60's 335. So if that is the sound you are after I would look at three different models. The Antiquity, Seth Lover, Pearly Gates and maybe an Alnico2 Pro. All of these to varing degrees can get a respectable PAF sound. A lot will have to do with the guitar you are putting them into and what Amp you are going to be playing thru. EVH over the years has changed his sound dramatically, so it would be in your best interest to mention what era of his sound you are after.

i´ve had bad experience with a duncaN 59 for it was too vintage for higain solos.so that one is out.i will be using a breed on the bridge.doesn´t need to be a van halen tone.but vai neck tones are a must have.
what i missed on the paf 59 was the perfect clean sound.someone here recomended me a jazz neck,but i dont think it could do vai solos,not being distorted enough.
any thoughts are much welcome

The jazz will do almost anything you want, including distortion. Don't let the name fool you. It's a great pup for rock.

i was almost goin for the air norton but to my ears the cleans arent good enough,at leat with mister Petrucci´s dvd instructional video.sounds like arse.
could you play vai tunes(for the love of god) that use the neck with the jazz?it will be on a cort m700,prs style guitar.alsdo do i get trembucker spaced for the neck since it has a wilkinson tremolo?

I don't think the Jazz would give you the quot;For the Love of Godquot; sound, although it's a great pickup in itself. The DiMarzio Evolution pickup that Vai has uses a ceramic magnet, has more output, and is fatter sounding than the Jazz. In all honesty, I would probably just get an Evolution if that's the sound you're looking for. Trembucker models only apply to bridge pickups so you don't need to worry about that.

do you think the breed neck what do that as well?

I think it is a little quot;muffledquot;. The jazz will do almost anything you want, but I think it is great with little distortion, not so great with high gain.

just what i needed to know.
jazz is going out,maybe in the future in a es-335 based guitar.
in goes the breed neck or the air norton.
guess ill just have to take a lucky guess....

You will need a neck pickup that is hotter than the bridge pickup.

dimarzio tech support sure is fast.
they told me to forget about the airzone for the neck for iut would be to bass heafvey for most player,and try an air norton or breed neck.
since almost everyone here thinks of the breed as a better,not so hot evo ill give it a try.i can always put it in the bridge position.

can i use a breed bridge at the neck?and vice versa.
if i use a breed neck in the bridge wont it loose some of its good tone qualitys for just being equalized diferently for the neck?
