hi guys,
long time ago I noticed that my pinky jumps around somewhere far away from the fingerboard and thus sometimes it is late when it comes into play the next time.
I never really tried to break it of this habit, but I'm sure it limits my skills.
Does anybody out there have experience how to train my pinky to remain near the strings when it is not used. Tried to force it for a few minutes and it was quite strenuous - I cramped both hands and also the rest of my body.
Is it worth working on improving this? Do you know good exercises?
Your input is welcome
Chris
Hey Chris,
I read your post and the only exercise that I practise regularly, that I think may help, is really an alternate picking one. But it's the only reason I have any control what-so-ever over my pinky. I'll try to tab it.
E-1-2-3-4-------------------
B---------2-3-4-5-----------
G-----------------3-4-5-6--- etc. (You can make up your own patterns)
The important part is that you use all four fingers of your fretting hand. This exercise isn't specifically for your problem but I think it will help because it will force you to use your pinky. After a while try to build up some speed, but be sure to make each note ring out smoothly.
I hope this may be of some use,
-Benja
And repeat
Be sure to use your pinky and ring finger for the 12 11 parts..
Start off slowly and only increase tempo if you can repeat it 8-10 times without feeling pain..
thanks, seems I have to start from scratch with all that classical violin etudes. already did that 8 years ago - that's so depressing :-(

Or save yourself the trouble and lop it off. Seriously, the above practice is probably the best thing.
I used to worry about it, too. I know that it would be nice to train it, but I just gave up altogether. I've come to the realization that I already play fast enough, it's the accuracy that sucks, so now I just play how I play and try to be more accurate and happier. If it's any consequence, I saw Dave Murray playing with his pinky up high, so good enough for the Irons, good enough for me.-Matt
