Hey guys,
Thanks very much for all the info! Truly an amazing group!
I've got a question... Is it possible to change the ceramic\magnet on the bottom of the Seymour Custom to an Alnico 2 to make it sound more like the Custom Custom pickup? I'm very new to this, but loving every minute of it!
Again, thank you.

Bro if you swap out the ceramic for a II it will BE a custom-custom
they are the same pup with different magnets

Yes it is. The only difference between the custom and the custom custom is the magnet so it wont only sound like a CC, it will be a CC.

it will for some smart-ass tech when he looks at the pickup and see's whatever the sticker on a custom says and will be like quot; you idiot its a custom not a custom customquot;. wow that sounds like something someone at guitarcenter would say and then he'd say quot;you can't CHANGE magnets in pickupsquot;. wow what fun it is to poke fun at those idiots guitarcenter employes.

Sorry had to give you a GC clerk answer!

I used that in my above post too. Someone should just start a guitarcenter clerk joke thread or something.

What do you call a guitar center employee at the bottom of a lake?

A good start !!!!!!!!

Bloody GC clerks. :fing25:

As for how to change the magnet, loosen the bottom plate screws, grab the magnet with a set of needlenose plyers, replace with a new magnet, re-tighten the screws. Not difficult.

Be sure to note the orientation of the old magnet (with a compass, or even a bar magnet that you have marked). If you reverse the magnetic polarity the pickup will become out of phase with the other one. As a final test check the magnetic polarity of the screw poles and the stud poles (for a PAF style pickup they will not be the same).

FWIW if the pickup has been potted the wax may be uneven. You can heat the bottom plate and magnet with a hair dryer to melt the wax... and maybe add a few drips from a candle to replace what was stuck to the old magnet.

By all means save the old bar magnets, and label them so that you know what pickups you removed them from and what type of magnet you believe it to be.
