I just grabbed an old set pretty cheap but have never heard these.I plan on returning my Strat back to 3 sc's.I'm looking for peoples opinions on these to decide if I should even bother putting them in . I had always thought I'd try some APS in it but I came across these and grabbed them.
I'm using an SSL-6 in the middle position of my Strat. The 6 is the same pup as the 5, except for flat vs staggered poles. I love it. Whats interesting is, it appears to be the same pickup, more or less, as the Quarter Pound, except for the 1/4quot; pole pieces, but while the QP has a much more bass heavy EQ, the 5/6 stays truer to single coil tone.
Both my QP's and SSL-6 are tapped, but I'm ignoring that aspect of their sound in this post since you didn't mention that you have the tapped 5's.
Basically, their nice, quot;Strattyquot; pickups, with a bit more beef than conventional singles. I think you'll like them.
i used to use a custom flat in the bridge of my strat for a long time, still would be if i didnt have a twangbanger and a maple board/ash body. in a bright guitar, i like the smoother treble of the twangbanger. in a rosewood/alder body i really like the custom. ive used them in the neck as well with great results, if you are after a hotter sound. they still sound like a strat pup but with more mids and a less strident treble responce
