I was told that this model is a cross between a JB and DD tonally and is frigging hot? sounds good to me
I have one in my Dinky right now, and I have to say, it does sound pretty good. It measures about 14.5K, but has a huge ceramic magnet in it, like the DD. It doesn't have the harsh character I'm used to out of ceramic's. It's pretty thick, as well.

how is it compared to the JB or a emg 81??
They sound harsh, grainey, and like crap to me. I guess that's why I have a drawer full of them.

If you have a drawer full of them, would you mind sending one or two over to CA? Or maybe a neck pickup or two? I haven't played it enough to really compare it to an 81 or JB, but it's harsher and thicker from initial testing.
I've heard that a JB/500T hybrid sounds orgasmic, though...
i think the 500t sounds a little muddy, doesnt have the clarity of the DD

To me the 500T is like the Distortion but with a little more treble grind to it. It's a prety good metal pup.
i think a better comparison is saying the 500T is a combination between the Custom and the Distortion. Not realyl fair to put the JB in there because it is Alnico 5

Your 500T is only 14.5k?
Mines around 17K.
Hey - you guys should know by now I'm a defender of the Gibson pup! Lester, Didn't you have 500T's in one of those Pauls? Before you swapped them out? As I have always said, overall they put good all around pups in their guitars. If they marketed quot;Les Paul Texas Bluesquot; models, they would suck compared to something with a PG set. If they marketed quot;Les Paul Heavy Metalquot; I'd like to see DD's in them. But you can walk in to the store, pick up the Paul, and knock out a blues/jazz/rock/metal/pop tune no problem - the righteous Paul tone is there! Assuming you have the chops...try them. You might like them. There is always smething out there, though, with bass/mid/treble/output tweek more to your taste. But overall they rock!
And my 490r is still not now - or ever - for sale to anyone!

1 on that!
Waaay too harsh for my ears. I went to a JB and now a DD in my SG-X. I'm lovin' the DD.
I used it 2 years with Gibson Xplorer. it sounds good, something between dd and jb in my opinion but i needed thicker sound and i replaced it with custom but overall its a great pup.
i had one in a gibson with 300 vol pot and i found it harsh with no bass , the DD is much better .
I actually like the 500T for the really hard stuff. I would say its like if a Duncan distortion and an Invader reproduced, and the Duncan custom was the milk man the child would sound like a 500T. It like a direct mix of all 3 Duncans in my opinion.
I kind of like the 498T, and that's plenty hot. Alnico 5
