I've started to build a 2x10 extention cabinet for my 2x10 Fender Prosonic Combo but I still can't decide what speakers to order. The Prosonic has Celestion Custom Shop speakers in.
The cab will be open back, it's just easier that way. I was reading in the Aspen Pitman Tube Amp Book (brilliant book, everyone should own a copy!) that open back cabs will always lack the bass offered by a closed back cab. He also mentioned that that Jensons offer a lot more bass response while Celestions really excel with a big midrange.
Would like to hear opinions as to what other forum users would go for, and possibly why if you've time.
Thanks,
Benja
P.S. Please vote in poll, thanks!
Neither. I'd go for Weber C10Q's. Ted renumbered all of his speakers with new numbers a while back and his C10Q now has another number. But he'll know what you mean. I like Ted's 10's better than any other 10's I've tried and the C10Q is my favorite of his ceramic magnet speakers. The Jensen P10R reissue is a very cool speaker but if it's tight low end you're after go for the Weber C10Q's. Lew
Lew's probably right about the Webers, or maybe you could get Celestion Vin 10's?
My only real complaint about Jensens is that they tend to fart out when you hit them with a lot of volume.
the alnico jensens have a great tone but are fairly low wattage speakers and break up pretty quick. cool if you like that tone. ted makes great speakers so im sure his jensen copy is sweet.
if they still make the vintage 10 thats a nice speaker too. a celestion type and a jensen type mixed might sound really nice too
I've yet to find a Jensen speaker that tops Celestion.
I had 2x12 Jensons in a custum built open back cabinet many years ago. A friend had Lansings in the same type of custom built cabinet. My Jenson's weren't bad but were inferior to the Lansings.
Thanks for the tips everyone. I've never heard of Weber before so that's some more homework for me. At the risk of sounding like a complete and utter ignoramous, are the Webers available in the U.K?
I think at the minute I'm leaning towards the Celestion type speakers, simply because I despise the farty noises a lot of people are describing as being much more typical of the Jensons.
I think if this was a head and cab setup I'd go for the Celestions without giving much thought to the Jensons, it's just the idea of mixing the types together that appeals. With any luck I'd end up with a sound that was far less common.
I'd be interested to hear if other forum users usually let the cab type (open-back/closed-back) decide what sort of speakers to use. Or if the first consideration is the amp make (Fender/Marshall). Though I guess in truth, most people just let their ears decide what the tone needs, regardless of anything else.
Thanks again!
I love jensens, probably my fav.
