Hi, I will soon be buying new pickups for my guitar an H/S/S Washburn Lyon with one volume and one tone
I was thinking a 59 in the bridge, vintage flat in middle and texas hot in neck, so my question is, as I will also be replacing the Volume and Tone Pots, should I install 250k or 500k pots
My guitar has an alder body, vintage tremelo, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard
also I will be using a Robert Keeley TS808 and a fender pro juinor
Can anyone help with the decision?
Thanks
welcome to the forum. I do not mix and match singles with buckers in my stuff, but lots of guys here do...maybe one of them will chime in, until then I would do a searsh on the forum and see...this has been talked about before
I frequently use an H/S setup and my control layout is normally A master 500k Vol. for the bridge-no tone and a master 250k/250k vol. tone for the neck.
I've got a Warmoth frankenstrat with Custom 5/Vintage Flat/APS 2 pickups (H/S/S) with 250k pots for master volume and master tone. Playing thru a Blues Jr. and a TradeMark 10, I never felt a need for higher value pots to get/preserve more treble. I would start with 250k pots. If that sounds too dark, then you could try putting a resistor between one of the pots amp; its ground. A 50k resistor on 250k volume pot would be the same as a 300k pot. Same for the tone, and how often do you really turn either the volume or tone all the way down? Anyway, resistors are cheap, so just experiment until you find the value that works for you. I really doubt that 500k volume and tone pots are needed for a bridge humbucker, and I know the single coils would be too bright.
I do use a Kinman-style treble bleed mod on volume pots (cap in series with resistor) to maintain treble as you roll the volume down. (Please search the Pickup Lounge for endless threads on that subject )

I don't think the difference between 250k and 500k is going to be that noticeable, my legacy deluxe has a SSH set up and uses a 500K volume pot - the singles are very smooth and balanced, and I've used 250K pots on other guitars with a single and a humbucker and can't say there was much of a loss of high end in the humbucker. I say get one of each and try them out - you may hear a difference.
Pick your poison. Particularly with the brighter vintage style humbuckers a 250 can sometimes be preferable. Its a matter o personal taste
