Hey y'all- I'm new here. I have an '87 LP jr. with a Lindy Fralin P-90 15%
overwound and it has the best tone I've ever had. I have a PRS custom 22 with a stop tail, and I just put Phat cats in it, trying to chase after that killer p-90 tone of the junior. I've replaced the 5-way rotary (I hate that thing) with a 3 pos toggle. I don't care for the tone of the phat cats. I'm gonna keep messing with the pup height, but do yall have any suggestions for the capacitor or the pots? Right now they are a .47 cap and 500k pots. Mohagony body, maple top. Thanks y'all
Welcome to the forum.
What are you missing from your tone?
I have mine in a semi-hollow body and love them. Mine are wired with 500k pots and .022 orange drop caps.
They just seem harsh. I don't know how to express what I'm looking for- fat, round, alive- hell, I don't know. They seem to lack that easy, smooth, warm overdrive that I'm used to with all the other P-90's i've tried. Would it be the maple top? I'm gonna try the .02 cap and mess with the height a little more. Thanks
I think it is the maple top. The .022 cap ight make it brighter. In fact, I would go with the .047 cap and maybe knock down the tone control to 250K.
That should warm it up a bit.
Thanks man-I'll try the 250 pot- should I do the volume pot as well?
I'd stick to the tone control at first. If it's still too bright, then change the volume, though you might lose some detail.
Thanks man-I'm doing it as I type!I'll et ya know in a few.
Cool. Good luck.
I think that might have did it, though I won't know for sure until I rehearse with the band. Thanks for all your help!
No prob.
BTW- which direction are they supposed to face, and does it matter? From the top its hard to distinguish which side is the high E and the low E.There is writing on the bottom of the PUP and the wire comes out at one side- I went by the writing, though the wire is on the quot;inconvenientquot; side( top-farthest from the hole). Any ideas?
I just put the pickups where the wiring was most convenient for me. I really don't think it makes a difference, being that the polepieces are right in the center of the bobbin.
