if you can tune a guitar by ear perfectly does that mean you might have perfect pitch, or just that ur used to playing guitar or something?

The ear actually has no memory. It's impossible to remember what something sounds like, tho we will often remember the impressions such a sound had on us.

Perfect pitch is the ability to hear intervals between notes in your head, but that is really generalizing it. You need to be born with perfect pitch, you cannot attain it. I was taught a method of relative pitch, where you can analyze the interval between two notes and pick up the key from there.

You may very well indeed have perfect pitch, if you're tuning perfectly to pitch by 'ear', which is actually more 'by brain'.

I can get pretty close to pitch without using a tuner, but I always double check, just to be sure.

its not just the tuning thing, sometimes if i hear one note on my guitar it will remind me of a song and it turns out that thats the note and also if i hear or think of a note i will go right to the exact note on my guitar without thinking about it. its not just once in awhile, its like all the time. im just curious

I'm confused. (seriously) If it's impossible to remember what something sounds like, how do I figure out a riff or part without listening to the song as I do it?

BTW, I agree about the quot;you have to be born with perfect pitchquot; thing. Anything learned is relative, not perfect.

Your brain remembers the intervals between the notes that you hear.

What Ben's saying (correct me if I'm wrong) is that if you hear a note and think quot;that's a C#quot; ... you remember the note, but when to check it's actually a different note.

So you'll remember the riff, but you wouldn't remember what the opening note was ... but you will know where to go after the first note

perfect/absolute pitch are very contraversial subjects....absolute pitch is the ability to sing/name a note without a reference pitch, and do it absolutely and perfectly everytime. Doesn't mean it's easy, I know a couple guys with absolute pitch, and occasionally they have to think a few seconds before naming a tone, but they get it.

Perfect pitch, is the ability to jump intervals perfectly.....generalized.......perfect pitch does not mean absolute pitch...a person with perfect pitch may have it, but it may not be perfect to a western scale. There are many stories of people with perfect pitch who's quot;perfectquot; pitch is not set to 440!! Very odd, but it happens....Absolute pitch is perfect pitch tuned to 440

They are doing many many many studies into perfect pitch and they are discovering that it's not something you are necessarily born with, but something that is developed in a time before you can actually be taught...therefore it's kind picked up, and not taught to you...it's a lot like discovering your hands as a baby, no one can show you that, it just happens....some people it happens to based on the right stimuli, but some people it doesn't. I had a website with all of this research on it, (and no, it's not that goofy program advertised in guitar magazines, it's a real university study) but I'm not sure where it is anymore since I lost all my bookmarks in my reformat. ...anyway

Alright... I don't got perfect pitch, I just felt my avatar was in keeping with the subject and belonged in this thread.

I think it's another one of those things you can get if you're young but not when you're older. Back when I took piano lessons (I was 10) I could tell a C from a D from a G etc... no so much any more

Alright so riddle me this:

When played a random tone on a piano, I can usually identify what tone it is, given a few seconds of thinking.

I can tune a guitar by ear (using harmonics and 5th fret methods) within 10 cents of standard with no tuner.

I can't sing for **** but if you ask me to sing (laaaaaahhh) a tone I can do it given a few seconds of thought.

I can usually identify keys and key changes in songs very quickly.

What do I have? Relative Pitch?

I've known several horn players with perfect pitch. I'm not sure if you can achieve that with training but am told you can. I don't have it.
Relative pitch can be learned, comes in very handy if you sing harmony. If you can sing do re mi fa so la ti do out of sequence you have relative pitch.

B2D: that sounds very very close to perfect pitch if you can actually do as you say....you should be tested...I'm sure just bout any major university's music department could test you for it
