I left my Engl Screamer with the tech since one of the capacitors was dead so it was humming quite a lot. Whilst I was there, I asked him which speaker could I put in my amp to make it sound quot;warmerquot;. Engl's have this quot;edgequot; which I find a bit too trebly.
He hooked up my amp to a speaker of a Fender HRD Limited Editon which has a Jensen C12N speaker. I kind of liked the sound of the amp better because it rolled off the highs a bit and added more bass.
I thinking whether to replace the stock Celestion V80 or not?
I have NEVER heard of anyone use a quot;Fender-typequot; speaker like the C12N in a high gain amp like Engl.....
I thought it sounded better with it, but should I consider anything else....?

That would probably be one of the Italian made Reissue Jensen C12N's...right? Those are nice sounding speakers...kind of smooth and buttery sounding. The low end is a little looser than I prefer and they do seem to blow more easily than the Celestions I prefer when played really hard. What the output of your amp? 50 watts or more might be to much for the Jensen C12N RI if you're going to overdrive the daylights out of it and play it hard. Lew

Yep, the speaker is the Italian ones. My amp is rated 50W and the speaker is rated 50W as well. I could order the C12K, which is identical to the C12N, but is 100W. The price is the same (2 euro difference). My tech however say that he's had some bad experiences with higher rated speakers in lower rated amps (don't remember why - could be because of the transformers) although I have noticed that the Fender DRRI (22W) uses the C12k as well.
Bear in mind that I play a low volumes mainly and I use a high gain amp so I can overdrive it without being too loud.
Well, if you don't push it to hard you might be OK. I have had more aggressive players blow them though. Not even guys who play super loud...just guys who hit and snap the strings really hard. Blues and rootsy players actually. I've heard your playing though...you seem to have apretty even attack on the strings. A 50 watt speaker in a 50 watt amp can be a little risky though. Lew

Doesn't the new 100W Twin use 2 of these speakers (2x50W)?
Is the new Twin 100 watts or 80 watts like the original blackface version? Regardless, you don't see many Twin Reverbs from the 60's with thier original Jensen C12N's...they blew 'em up! You do see a few 40 watt Pro Reverbs from the 60's still with the original C12N's though.
By the 70's, Fender went with much heavier duty speakers in the Twin than the original C12N...those speakers didn't sound as good though.
my mistake. the twin reissue uses 2 C12K's (100w each) , whilst the twin amp uses 2 eminence speakers (rating not specified)
I have a C12K speaker in my DRRI and it sounds pretty good, but it is a tad 'buttery'. It doesn't get the kind of definition that I used to get with my D130f JBL's.

I like a tighter, less blurry response...especially to the lows.
Haven't tried the C12K...it's not a reissue of a vintage Jenson guitar speaker. Far as I know, the 50's and 60's C12N (ceramic) and P12N (alnico) were the top of the Jensen guitar speaker line. Lew

My amp is a bit too tight, hence the buttery Jensens might work well with it. I gave the speaker a quick try at the techs lab and it improved the bass response and reduce the edgy highs.
