Alright, I just got my Gibson Les Paul a month ago and the neck is so ridiculious that I cant even play my favorite strat no more. Anyways, I need to put in some new pick-ups because the ones in there just arent cutting it. I'd like to have something similar to the Hot Rail pick-up if they make it. Im going for an Iron Maiden-ish type sound if that helps any.

Thanks!

If you want something hot and focused like the hot rails, my suggestion would be a Distortion Set.

Sounds like you're looking for something hot and raunchy.

A Custom bridge with '59 neck, or a pair of Duncan Distortions might do the trick.

Hey man Welcome to the Forum!

There is nothing quite like a Hot Rails, but depending which Maiden guitarist is your fav. we can definitely send you in the right direction.

Murray, and Smith both use Dimarzio Super Distortions, for full size buckers (the closest Duncan would be a Distortion) Murray also uses the Hot Rails. Tonally the closest thing would probably be and Invader, but in LP's it might sound muddy.

Gers uses JBjr's, the JB would be a logical choice. I think he uses a neck model too on Rock in Rio, or maybe a lil 59, in either case his tone on Blood Brothers is phenomenal.

Also, I don't know how much you are willing to spend, but a pup I custom built at User Group Day sounds like it may do what you want.

It is a hybrid (which you could conceivable build yourself) The screw coil is from a Distortion, and the slug coil is from a custom. It also has the large Distortion size magnet.

For the neck I recommend a Jazz, I love it for a LP neck slot....well maybe any neck slot!

I second both these suggestions

Thanks! I roam here often and finally decided to join. : )

I think Im going to try the Duncan Distortions and see how they turn out. Most of the time I just run straight through an amp or I use a DS-1 Distortion when I go over to my friends house since he has a PA.

Also, if anyone happens to know of a good octave pedal for interwining solos I'd appreciate it.

If you're a constant tweaker you might want to look into the DS-1 mods that John (stratdeluxer) does. Cheap, and everyone loves them.

I haven't tried a distortion neck, some guys like them though, and some don't. To me a LP neck slot is too muddy, so I get a pup with clarity to clean it up. That's why I'm such a huge proponent of the Jazz. It sounds good alone, or mixed.

a good octave pedal, hmmm..... the MXR Blue Box. not really. I want an Electro Harmonix POG, and i have heard good things, too.

Well, I have a JB/Jazz combo in my fat strat actually, its not really what I was expecting so I figured Id just try the DD combo and if I dont like it I can just take the Jazz out of my strat and try it in my Gibson.

I had a PS-5 Supershifter but that thing is a flimsy piece of junk and doesnt give me the right sound I want. I heard about the POG also, but I havent gotten to try it out yet.

Also, is there a link to the modded DS-1's Id love to check them out. Im gonna go search for it now.

For full out metal, it might be the best way to go. One person had a DD bridge and a JB neck. The A5 mag made for a bit less output, then it being further from the strings took a bit too. The JB in the neck supposed to sound super sweet. That was the original set I was going for in my Heritage (LP style) but ended up with a Jazz/JB....pretty weird huh? Of course then you are really going High Output all the way.

A search will yield the most results for John's mods.

Careful, I think John objects to his prices being out and about.

Hey, I was wondering if they make DD's with that chrome/silver plating stuff?

Do you mean a nickel cover?Originally Posted by ApprenticeHey, I was wondering if they make DD's with that chrome/silver plating stuff?
