Who plays them? What's the sound like? Is it hard to play them without a pick?

Are we talking 8 string as in the equivalent to a 12 string guitar or 8 string as in extended range?

You're not going to be able to play one without a pick. You have to use a pick. I have a Hamer 12 string Chaparral bass. It's the same as an 8, but has one more octave string. I can't think of any songs with an 8 string on it, but I can think of some with a 12 string bass on them. They sound the same for the most part....close enough for you to get the idea anyways. quot;Jeremyquot; by Pearl Jam will give you an idea. The very beginning is a 12 string bass. Also listen to quot;Gonna Raise Hellquot; by Cheap Trick. They'll give you an idea of their sound.

yeah tom petersen of cheap trick used one a lot back in the day ... the sound is huge ... sounds best through a DI box and a PA instead of simply a bass amp .. and yeah, it's always played with a pick

see em on sale in the latest AMS catalogue?

If I remember right didnt Hendrix play one on quot;Spanish Castle Magicquot;? I know the bassist for Overkill used one on the song quot;Horrorscopequot;

Doug Pinnick from Kings X used one for a long time, maybe still does. You can hear it on quot;Faith Hope Lovequot; and quot;Gretchen Goes to Nebraskaquot; among others.

Top 5 of a guitar, bottom three of a bass. Meant for jazz, but I think it would be a great guitar for rock in certain applications, including the band I'm in right now. It depends on the player and the context.

that looks like itd be just plain awkward to play

If you try and play it like a regular guitar yes ... but if you get a chance to watch people like Charlie Hunter play it's pretty impressive, but then again the playing style tends to be fairly different than your regular six string.

I'd definatly be interested in getting one of these under my paws to give it a run

I think Noel Redding used to use one in the earlier part of Hendrix's career, you can hear it on the BBC Sessions CD's, one of the guys introducing actually says quot;and, on 8 string bass, noel reddingquot; and on Highway Chile, there is a weird kinda bass sound, I think that is 8 string too...

i'm pretty much certain that joe de maio(however you spell him) of manowar uses on on black Wind, Fire and Steel

Sting played 8-string bass on some Police stuff, but I can't pick any particular tracks off hand.

1 on Tom Peterson of Cheap Trick. His Hamer 12-string sounds huge. The cut that stands out in my mind is You're All Talk from Cheap Trick In Color.

Ahh yes, good picks for examples there. Also, Doug Pinnick of Kings X uses the Hamer 8-string VERY regularly, His sound is very reminiscent of a Bengal Tiger growling!

Actually Doug Pinnick plays a 12 string bass like the one I have.

I blame insecure bassists.

Good Lord YES, that bass sound is HUMUNGOUS!!

quot;Gonna Raise Hellquot; that Jolly mentioned with the 12-string is large too.

You're never going to play anything flashy on an 8 or 12 string bass but the sound is awesome.

I think the guy in Dream theatre plays a 8 string , with his fingers ,,

Indeed he does. I don't remember which tracks Myung used it on, but I know for sure that he used one on parts of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.

from : localhost/looks like a pain to play with your fingers..
