Subject pretty much says it all, but I'll add that I'm looking for medium-high output. I'm looking for a quot;Les Paul on steroidsquot; type of sound, but nothing like an Invader or anything like that.

I was thinking Custom Custom bridge and Pearly Gates neck. What do you think?

I think you had a great idea.

I knew you'd say that ... you gave me the idea!

Anyone else? I read walnut is a bit brighter than mahogany ... is this an important factor?

I would suggest a DiMarzio Breed set. It's designed to be a PAF turned to 12, in a bright guitar. I the neck version in the neck of my RG750VP and I really like the sound. It's incredibly smooth and thick, but very controlled. a good song to listen to is quot;Love Bloodquot; by Steve Vai. All the rhythm tracks are recorded with Breeds in a Jem.

I wish I could suggest a Duncan, but I've always found them to be very bright, except the Hotrails, but that doesn't apply here...

Also, my favourite PAF on 'roids is the Gibson Dirty Fingers. Very fat, powerful yet articulate and extremely rude

Paul on Steroids? How many steroids?

Good choices. Although I like the Jazz neck. I hear so much about the PG neck but never really played with one long enough to really evaluate it.

Here's a question, and you'll benefit too. What's the tonal difference between the PG neck and Jazz neck (other than the tone chart descriptions)?

i think you want some alnico 2 pups in there 'cus walnut is HELLA bright .. you gotta tame those highs, friend ... so i think your PGn/CCb set is perfect .. an AIIPn might be even better

good luck

I would tend to second this except you might be OK with a quot;59quot; in the neck.

quot;59quot; or Alnico II Pro Neck
Custom Custom Bridge

I worked on a walnut Les Paul built by Dan Erlewine at the same time as he built the walnut Flying V for Albert King. It was made from the same wood...the same log. I felt like it had a bit less low end and that the resonance had a little more quot;pingquot; to it and that it had a slightly brighter tone than a normal Les Paul.

Alnico 5 or Ceramic pickups would give the guitar a little low end which might be a plus. Alnico 2 will have more mids but less lows and treble.

Since you want a quot;Les Paul on steroidsquot; tone, I think you might consider a Duncan 59N for the neck and a Duncan Custom or Distortion for the bridge. Or maybe even a set of Duncan Distortions: a neck and bridge model.

59n Custom!

My brother definitly Genesis Mr. Browney in the bridge and a Duncan Seth Lover in the neck. Slammin combo.

Thanks gents. I have something in the works ... I haven't decided on mahogany or walnut, but rest assured, it will be awesome.

CC bridge and a PG neck.
